On 13 May, we took the Antwerp Declaration one step further to discuss the role of biotechnology in boosting Europe’s industrial strategy.    After the incredible support gathered for the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal with over 1,100 signatories, Cefic and supporters of the Antwerp Declaration are hosting Antwerp Dialogues. These dialogues bring together different perspectives around one key interest, to collectively foster a deeper understanding of the issue and offer the new policy leaders' recommendations to help shape future policies.      In collaboration with partners like the EFPIA - European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries, and CropLife Europe, our recent dialogue zoomed in on the pivotal role of #biotechnology in Europe's industrial strategy. I had the pleasure of attending the most recent Antwerp Dialogue on #Biotechnology on May 13th. At this dialogue, we advanced the Antwerp Declaration by discussing the important role of biotechnology in supporting Europe’s industrial strategy and achieving the Green transition. The Antwerp Declaration, with its impressive number of over 1,100 signatories 📝 stands as a powerful testament to our collective commitment. This commitment is directed towards shaping robust and forward-thinking policies that will drive Europe's industrial growth and innovation. The Dialogues intend to dig deeper into specific topics, in this case Biotechnology. The discussions were both insightful, highlighting the tremendous potential of biotechnology to drive industrial growth 📈 and innovation💡in Europe. CropLife Europe and its members champion innovative, science-based 🔬 solutions for sustainable agriculture 👩🌾 👨🌾 In this context, plant biotechnology emerges as a crucial and integral part of these solutions. Looking ahead 🔭 Europe must focus on accelerating market approvals to bring innovative technologies to the European market more swiftly. In terms of research, a predictable, balanced, and effective intellectual property framework is essential to stimulate innovation in this sector. Lastly, in collaboration with EU and national authorities, we need to demonstrate the added value of biotechnology to build public trust. We're thrilled to announce that the proposal for our €41M PharmECO project has been approved! 🎉 Co-funded by industry and the European Union under the Innovative Health Initiative, PharmECO aims to revolutionize pharmaceutical manufacturing with cutting-edge sustainable and scalable technologies and harmonized sustainability assessment methodologies. Kicking off on October 1st, 2024, we'll be collaborating with 30 other esteemed European partners to drive innovation and sustainability in the industry. Stay tuned for updates! The role of University of Graz and RCPE - Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH will be to develop process-intensified and scalable methodologies for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that yield fewer impurities, side products, and waste, with continuous processing serving as the overarching theme. Specifically, we will focus on solvent-minimized protocols via mechanochemistry/reactive extrusion, the application of water as a sustainable reaction medium, photo- and electrochemical processes, biocatalytic cascades, and the use of renewable raw materials to mitigate environmental and economic burdens. In addition, we will employ model-based advanced control using process analytical technology (PAT) concepts, soft sensor concepts, human-in-the-loop concepts as well as digital twins in biomanufacturing, advancing sustainability via optimizing product quality and reducing waste. 💡 Reflecting back on CESPE 2024! 💡 PwC Belgium had the pleasure of sponsoring the CESPE 2024 conference on October 24th! The conference included three main themes: Digitalization, which explored the transformative potential of AI in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry; Enabling Technologies, which highlighted advancements in flow chemistry and high-throughput experimentation; and Biomanufacturing. We proudly presented our work on the Belgian biomanufacturing ecosystem and participated in an exciting panel debate with key ecosystem stakeholders. Our presentation was a call-to-action to ecosystem actors and policymakers to ensure we maintain our impressive global position in this field. The discussion explored Belgium's logistical expertise, the fragmented ecosystem, and the importance of initiatives like CESPE in bridging academia and industry.
