#PlayWell | “Sport is so important for young people’s physical, mental and social health. The group nature of team sport is particularly beneficial for social health outcomes such as reduced loneliness,” Dr Katherine Owen, University of Sydney. Participation in sport builds a stronger Australia. We welcome this research from Dr Owen on the powerful role sport can play in connecting young people. Creating environments where participants can enjoy a lifelong involvement in sport is a key focus of the #PlayWell Strategy as we work to ensure everyone has a place in sport. We know cost is also a barrier to participation and we look forward to working with Dr Owen and #PlayWell Leadership Group member Rochelle Eime on a project that will look at how to make community sport more affordable for all. By working together we can increase the number of Australians involved in sport. Find out more about the work we are doing with the sector to help more Australians to #PlayWell 👉 https://lnkd.in/ggkkphUa

🔒 #BESSTProject: Effecting Safeguarding in European Sport 🌍 The Building European Safe Sport Together project, funded by the #Erasmus+, has developed vital resources to help European sports organizations in the implementation of effective safeguarding practices. Led by a consortium of seven organizations, including the #NOC of the Netherlands🇳🇱 and Slovenia🇸🇮, the project was recently discussed at the #EOC Seminar in Budva, Montenegro📍. Aligned with the EOC’s mission to foster #safe, #equal, and #inclusive environments for athletes and to fulfill their potential, inspiring #healthylifestyles across the continent, the BESST project offers newly-released materials based on two years of extensive research and collaboration, marking a significant step towards a safer sports environment across Europe. These resources include: 🔑 A modern definition of abuse and harassment in sport, introducing "#transgressivebehaviour" as a unified term to describe harmful behaviours. 🔑 Frameworks and toolkits for sports organizations to integrate safeguarding practices effectively within their structures and among their members. 🔑 Research findings highlighting the need to prioritize safeguarding measures and drive cultural change towards sport free from harmful behaviours. As highlighted by Daniela Negreda, Advisor at IGNITX, “The BESST project has resonated across Europe, emphasizing the need for accessible, practical resources that empower sports organizations to take immediate action." Soenke Schadwinkel, EOA Project Coordinator, added: “Our goal has always been to equip European sports organisations with resources that are not only informative but actionable. We believe the provided toolkits will empower organisations to proactively raise awareness and establish safe environments for everyone involved in sports.” 🔗To learn more about how to prevent transgressive behaviour and access all the resources, visit the project BESST website 👉https://lnkd.in/eBKnXXTh. 🔗For further support, visit the IOC’s Safe Sport section on Athlete365 or contact 👉safeguardingofficer@olympic.org. The debate around the Raygun performance is FASCINATING. So much polarisation! Not many academics have managed to engage such a broad range of people in genuine discussion about a fringe cultural activity. “While some breakers see the Olympics as an opportunity and space for wider recognition, many have expressed concerns with the growing influence (and embrace) of transnational commercial organizations and institutional governing bodies in shaping and managing breaking’s future […] breaking’s institutionalization via the Olympics will place breaking more firmly within [Australia’s] hegemonic settler-colonial structures that rely upon racialized and gendered hierarchies.” Gunn, R., & Marie, L. (2023). The Australian breaking scene and the Olympic Games: the possibilities and politics of sportification. Global Hip Hop Studies, 4(1), 39-56. https://lnkd.in/gUhargDC

The immense positive power and passion that sport inspires has the remarkable ability to bring people together, transcending borders, cultures and differences. It is an essential pillar in promoting a more inclusive and peaceful world, rooted in the universal values and principles we cherish. Historically, sport has always played a pivotal role in our societies, acting as a dynamic platform for communication, a space where the culture of peace is cultivated and flourishes. Its ability to unite individuals and teach respect, tolerance and perseverance is unrivalled. It is an invaluable tool that has always been used to promote the values cherished by the United Nations and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. April 6, designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, is more than just a date. It is a celebration of the United Nations' recognition of the positive impact of sport on human, economic and social development. On this special day, which takes place every year, we honour and recognise the constructive role that sport and physical activity play in communities and in the lives of people around the world. Sport is much more than an activity; it is a fundamental right, a powerful means of building strong social bonds, encouraging sustainable development, peace, solidarity and mutual respect. This year's theme, "Sport for peaceful and inclusive societies", resonates deeply with our values. It reminds us that, through sport, we can build bridges, break down barriers and cultivate a culture of peace and inclusion. On this International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, let us commit to promoting the values that sport embodies, celebrating its unifying power and working together for a world where sport continues to be a major force for good. ____ #OIEC #SportForPeace #InternationalSportDay #DevelopmentAndPeace
