Our researchers find that terminations of Islamist armed conflicts are often followed by other manifestations of violence, such as the targeting of civilians or non-state armed conflict between rebel groups. By combining insights from the warscapes literature with research on conflict terminations, the new article by Isak Svensson, Desirée Nilsson & Tim Gåsste provides a more nuanced picture of how Islamist conflicts terminate. The article No End in Sight? Trajectories of War Terminations in Islamist Armed Conflicts in Studies in Conflict & Terrorism is available here. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfRyGB82

https://lnkd.in/dCb2m3BN Understanding the role of armed actors across the Middle East Experts assess the power and motivations of different groups in the Middle East crisis. 22 FEBRUARY 2024 The Gaza war has not been contained to its borders and has spilled over in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and the Red Sea, fuelling fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. This has included tit-for-tat attacks between Israel and the US on one side, and Iran and its armed allies, which fall under the ‘axis of resistance’ banner. These groups include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Popular Mobilization Forces and Islamic Resistance in Iraq and Syria, as well as the Houthis in Yemen. Making sense of how these armed groups function militarily, economically, and ideologically both domestically and transnationally, and how their relationship with Iran plays out is crucial to understanding their capabilities and motivations, and thinking through ways to reduce conflict in the precarious region. In this webinar, a panel of experts will discuss: How do the networks of the ‘axis of resistance’ operate domestically and transnationally? What makes up their military, economic, and ideological authority? What is their relationship to the state in these countries? How does this impact the political, economic and security landscape? How do these groups relate to Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps? Are they proxies or do they have autonomy? What are the tools that policymakers are currently using to approach and respond to these groups, and are they working? What can be done to reduce possible conflict in the region? Speakers Event chaired by Raya Jalabi.

The major question will be have the international community will use the opportunity presented by the events to help Lebanon regain real sovereignty. Strict implementation of UNSC resolutions 1559, 1680 and 1701 is critical to prevent repeating the mistakes of the past 20 years. The two elements critical for restablishing a sovereign Lebanese state are: 1. Disarmament of all non-state actors. 2. Gaining control over the Syrian border to prevent arm and money smuggling from Iran.
With Hezbollah hobbled following successful Israeli strikes on its leadership, communications, and weapons, Western actors have an opportunity to invest seriously in the future of Lebanon. The international community can work toward supporting a credible, inclusive coalition of opposition figures and forces - which must include the Shia community in all its diversity - to counter Hezbollah, its allies, and Iranian influence in Lebanon. Read Institute scholar Hanin Ghaddar's analysis of Hezbollah's succession plans and policy options for the United States and its partners.

🌍 The world is facing many challenges, but Africa still accounts for 70% of global conflict. The African Peace & Security Dialogue focused on two key regions: the Horn of Africa and West Africa. In West Africa, we've seen several coups, with opinions sharply divided. Some view them as breaches of AU protocol, while others, call them "progressive coups," which is a new concept. Meanwhile, the Horn of Africa remains a complex landscape, with all players (armed forces, sovereign leaders, and civilians) involved in the discussions. The inaugural #ASPD is a way to “Look at the practical ways in which we can design pathways towards peace.” – Max Boqwana, Chief Executive Officer #ThaboMbekiFoundation.
