Millions of Americans are already casting ballots for the 2024 election, using mail and early in-person voting. Georgia and North Carolina are leading with record-breaking early turnouts. However, a high volume of mail-in ballots in key states like Pennsylvania may delay the final results until after Election Day. Early voting is becoming a significant part of our democratic process—keeping an eye on trends can help prepare for how results may unfold. The election comes down to nine to 11 states. A presidential race is 50 separate state elections to accumulate 270 electoral votes. Most states are not swing states. Ga. Pa., Mich, Minn, Ariz., Wisc. and NH are in play most elections. The reason I think Pa. Gov. Josh Shapiro is leading to be the VP nominee is that in the three scenarios for the Democrats to win, Pennsylvania is number one in each. The Dems need Pa.'s 19 votes and it is a tossup. North Carolina is a Lucy and the Football state for Democrats. Obama won in 2008, and sometimes Democrats come very close, like Biden in 2020. But except for Obama, you have to go back to 1976, when Carter beat Ford. Right now, NC leans Republican, according to 270towin.com. Biden's replacement by Kamala Harris has tightened up the race in a week. and more important, started the money flowing again, $200 million in the last few days. Every time I go on Facebook, Harris is pitching me to send $10. Her ads are way more effective than the Biden ads were. They just reminded me how tired he looked. I met him 45 years ago at a political event in Southwest Virginia that I was covering as a kid reporter. He was a senator in his mid-30s, my kids' age now, a rising star with presidential ambitions that would take way longer than he thought to be realized. We've both gotten old. But I digress. Now it is all turnout. Early voting starts in September in some states and October in others. Look at folks you see during the day and try to guess if they are likely to vote. If you guess that it is unlikely, then try to think what would make them vote. People vote from habit, or civic obligation, or a stake in the outcome. If people feel none of those things you can still get them out, but it takes a neighbor dragging them out. Lincoln said find 'em and vote 'em. In a close race, this is where one side wins, because it has motivated field workers. A TV commercial cannot give a ride to the polls. In North Carolina, in-person early voting starts Oct. 17. Around 5 to 5.5 million people will probably cast ballots. There are 7.5 million registered voters now. Why 2 million registered voters won't vote, I don't know.

The General Election is just five days away! If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to make your voting plan. Every voter should have a plan before casting their ballot. Here are five steps you can take to make your voting plan: 1. Confirm your voter registration status. Some states, such as Virginia and the District of Columbia, allow you to register in person on Election Day or during early voting. You can check your registration status using this tool. 2. Research your early voting options. My prior blog post on early voting includes helpful early voting resources. 3. Learn your options for voting in person on Election Day. Know in advance where you can vote in person and what to bring with you. This site can help. 4. If you are voting in person, decide how and when you will get to the polls. Many organizations offer free or discounted rides to vote. For example, Lyft is offering half off rides to the polls on Election Day. 5. Get to know more about the candidates and issues on your ballot. It is critical to vote for all offices and issues on your ballot. My prior blog post on down-ballot voting has tips on how to prepare. If you need additional help creating your voting plan, you can call 1-866-OUR-VOTE for nonpartisan support. View this post (and its links) on my blog at: https://lnkd.in/eBpBiChZ

Monitoring the Incoming results: 2020 to 2024 Pennsylvania and Michigan Early Voting Numbers In 2020, early voting surged across the country driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and a hotly contested Presidential race. As early voting counts come in, it is reasonable to expect less early voting than pandemic times, but the question is: how much less? In 2020, 886,745 Pennsylvania voters had already cast their ballots by October 20th, with another 1,237,243 casting their vote in the two weeks before the election. So far, 220,356 Pennsylvania voters have cast their ballots in this year's election, and, while this number is lower than it was at the same point in 2020, it's still substantially higher than in previous elections, showing larger participation in early and absentee voting.
