Join us on November 24, 2024, for a compelling conversation at the intersection of philosophy and environmental studies with Dr. Kalpita Paul and Nishok G U, where we’ll explore humanity’s evolving—and sometimes unsettling—relationship with nature. Dr. Paul’s talk, “Phenomenology of Accident: A Reminder of the Ecological Reality of Human Beings,” invites us to question our assumptions about human resilience and vulnerability within fragile ecosystems like the Sundarbans delta. As global crises intensify, there is an urgent need to move beyond surface-level environmental debates and delve into the metaphysical layers of our human-environment connection. Dr. Paul’s work brings fresh perspectives, challenging dominant narratives by addressing how we, as humans, have gradually distanced ourselves from recognizing our own “killability” in the face of ecological realities. Her nuanced approach to phenomenology reminds us of the broader, pluralistic ways of perceiving our place within natural systems—prompting us to reconsider our choices and responsibilities. This discussion isn’t just about environmental challenges; it’s about rethinking the frameworks we use to make sense of our world, questioning the values we hold, and embracing a more profound understanding of environmental philosophy. Don’t miss the chance to engage in this transformative dialogue. Register here to join us: https://lnkd.in/gmxJs8Bh. 🌱 Spread the word—everyone is welcome! We must move out of flat in Warsaw in February 2025. With my upcoming academic position as University Professor and wife working, we cannot afford accommodation/life in Warsaw. My family will be moving to Switzerland, and I hope to be joining them sooner rather than later. Finding a position in Switzerland particularly at a #university or #museum open to me has proven difficult. I would like to try combining my position in Warsaw with a life/job in Switzerland closer to my family. Urgent advice or legal solutions to combine working/living in Poland-Switzerland including #remote work and maximum allowed #worktime as well as initial flexible to long-term #job #prospects in Switzerland for someone with my diverse #skillset, #experience and #versatility would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone can offer affordable accommodation in Warsaw for 1 person (< 2500 PLN) for short-term or long-term in northern Switzerland (line Basel – Wettingen) for family of 3 ( < 1400 CHF) starting February 2025 so I can maximally support my family in this unexpected endeavor that would be greatly appreciated. #academia #worklife #balance #family #poland #switzerland #paleontology #biology #life #legal #collection #manager #data #scientist #advise #Schweiz #Polska

For this week's featured #DUCProjectDragonfly observation, we're sharing a swamp darner, photographed and logged by iNaturalist user: lissa_d in South Glengarry, Ontario. The largest dragonfly in Eastern Canada, the swamp darner, measures between 82 and 94 millimetres long. These migratory dragonflies have a mostly brown abdomen with thin green stripes. Swamp darners are relatively rare in Canada because even the southernmost areas of Canada are at the edge of their northern range. Swamp darners are considered an imperilled species in Ontario and critically imperilled in Quebec and New Brunswick. In the fall, swarms of swamp darners migrate along the North Atlantic coast to warmer regions as far south as the Bahamas or even Mexico. Like many other migratory dragonfly species, the swamp darners’ migrations are a one-way trip. The individuals that fly south for the winter are not the ones who will return north the following year; it will be their offspring that make the journey back! Join Project Dragonfly on iNaturalist to add your observations! ➡️ https://loom.ly/Ty3qKWY #DucksUnlimitedCanada #CommunityScience #WetlandConservation #Habitat #Biodiversity #Ontario

Exciting Discovery Alert! Thrilled to announce the findings from our latest publication, revealing the presence of spotted hyenas in Egypt! Our research, a collaborative effort with Dr. Aldoushy Mahdy, marks a significant milestone, documenting the first-ever recorded instance of a spotted hyena in Egypt, observed within the confines of Jabal Elba National Park. Through meticulous tracking and analysis, our study elucidates the intricate movement patterns of this elusive creature, spanning from its initial sighting near the Sudanese border to its unfortunate demise in Wadi Yahameib. Furthermore, we delve into the profound conservation implications of this discovery, emphasizing the urgent need for heightened awareness and protection measures for these essential carnivores. 📢 NEW SCIENCE ALERT! Devil Rays in the Gulf of Guinea! 📊 In this recent study, Atlantic Pygmy Devil Rays, were observed during megafauna surveys in the shallow coastal waters off the Republic of the Congo, Gulf of Guinea (West Africa). ✍️These are the first records of this species in its natural habitat in Congolese waters, which may well offer an important habitat for these coastal batoids. ⚠️ While this discovery is a significant step forward in understanding the distribution of Atlantic Pygmy Devil Rays, it highlights an urgent need for management measures to protect them across their African range, especially given the recent increase in fishing activities in the region. To read the paper: 'First records of Mobula hypostoma (Bancroft, 1831), Atlantic Pygmy Devil Ray, (Myliobatiformes, Mobulidae) and other devil rays in shallow waters of the Republic of the Congo, Gulf of Guinea (West Africa)' by de Boer, Wieczorek and Notarbartolo di Sciara (2024), visit the link below! 👉https://buff.ly/4csZmEf 📸 Guy Stevens #DevilRays #Conservation #Education #Research #RepublicoftheCongo #GulfofGuinea

Below is the picture in which you may see a seedling. This is an acacia species native to Pakistan. This place (near settlement) has been abandoned for around a year. Last week I was just passing by and observed this species in the absence of mother trees. This place has had less human intervention in the past few months and the result can be seen. What do you conclude from this example? #trees #biodiversity #restoration
