As July comes to a close, we welcome August, a month to recognize and celebrate the remarkable women who drive South Africa forward. Women's Month is not only a celebration but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the significant challenges women face in our society. Despite progress, many women in South Africa continue to experience workplace harassment and unequal pay. Studies show that approximately 30% of women face harassment in the workplace, and around 40% are paid less than their male counterparts for the same work. These statistics underscore the need for ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and empower women in all sectors. We have a lot of work to do to become an equitable society. Let's start Women's Month by committing to staying informed and supporting initiatives that promote equality and empowerment for all women. #womensmonth #womensrights #payequality #endharassment #womenatwork

🌍 Did you know? 1 in 10 women live in extreme poverty, as stated by Dennis Francis, the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations on the first day of the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68). Attending the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York was a profound experience. The President's statement on the first day of the General Assembly deeply emphasized the persistent challenges faced by women globally. It highlighted how much work is still needed to uplift women and achieve gender equality. Gender equality is not just a women's issue; it's a human rights issue and a prerequisite for a sustainable world. When we empower women, we empower entire communities and societies. Let's work together to create a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive. #UnitedNations #GenderEquality #GlobalGoals #UNWomen #CSW68

A NORC evaluation of USAID programs designed to help women build economic self-sufficiency and address gender-based violence found the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) activities had increased participation from women when they were gender inclusive. Our evaluation recommends that more programs should consider being gender inclusive. “Household power dynamics in the many developing countries we studied are such that many men still have a say in whether women in their household can work outside of it,” said NORC research scientist Ridhi Sahai. “By inviting men to participate in WEE programming and training alongside their mothers, wives, or daughters, programmers can reach more female participants while also changing men’s mindsets about gender equality, GBV, and more.” Learn more about this work and NORC research into gender-based violence. go.norc.org/3vzjKmU

Today marks two years since the landmark Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Bill was adopted in Sierra Leone—a game-changer for women's rights and inclusion. This groundbreaking law has paved the way for: - Increased access to funding and job opportunities for women - Equal pay and maternity leave protections - A historic 30% quota for women’s political representation The GEWE Act has driven the most significant increase in women’s political participation in Sierra Leone’s history, setting a powerful precedent for gender equality across Africa. As we celebrate this milestone, let’s continue advocating for policies that empower women and create more inclusive societies. Together, we can build a future where equality is the norm, not the exception.
