"He’s been able to make new friends with people who understand what it’s like to be a young carer. It helped Sam to feel seen and heard.” Sam* is a young carer for his brothers, who are autistic, as well as his mum Sandra, who has epilepsy. At just ten years old, life is anything but typical for a child his age. For Sam and his family, Christmas is their favourite time of year 🎄 But the financial pressure meant they couldn't afford it. Sandra said: "We had no money or vision for Christmas. The kids had their ideas of what they wanted and were excited about, but it brought me dread." Luckily, Action for Children helped ease the strain. We provided the family supermarket vouchers, as well as a day out for Sam to give him a break from his caring responsibilities ❤️ Childhood is short. Be a Secret Santa today and help put the magic back into Christmas for a vulnerable child like Sam: https://bit.ly/4f86HKO *Name changed to protect identity. #SecretSanta

Did you know that nationwide, grandparents, other relatives, and close family friends are raising over 2.4 million children whose parents are unable to care for them? For almost 25 years, grandparents and other relatives have been included in the National Family Caregiver Support Program and the Native American Caregiver Support Program. These successful programs, which are overseen by the Administration for Community Living, provide for five categories of supportive services to grandparent and other relative caregivers aged 55+ raising children. States and Area Agencies On Aging can include these important caregivers in their aging plans, and we're providing them the tools to do just that! In this guide from Network managing partner USAging, agencies can find sample language to help develop language for their state and community. How can you use data to make #Halloween a little more fun? 📊👻 As you greet your trick-or-treaters, keep in mind that 42% of all children in New Jersey live in families that either are in poverty or are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), unable to afford basics. So, to help each child you meet have a great holiday, remember: 🎃 Don't comment on how they're dressed. Their families may live on tight budgets and may not have the time or money to invest in a costume. 🎃 Don't comment on their age. Older kids want to enjoy the holiday, too – and candy might be a rare treat. 🎃 Do offer them treats and wish them a Happy Halloween! There are probably a lot more ways you can utilize the ALICE data in your work or day-to-day life! In a physically abusive violent situation the best advice is to get immediate help. There are organisations and helplines that understand domestic abuse. Being in an abusive relationship is confusing. Victims often do not have the strength or courage to leave the situation. In the book by Jane Monkton Smith "In Control. Dangerous relationships and how they end in murder" Jane recalls how a victim of domestic abuse would not even leave with the Police who were trying to get her to hospital for medical attention. Victims who are in a trauma situations can be frozen by fear. Unable to make decisions, and are confused or in shock. The responses of domestic abuse victims vary. Fight, Flight, Freeze. Another is Fawn which is the appease or please response. People and professionals need to understand that victims need help and support.. Providing the wrong advice or conflicting information could result in tragedy. One is murder of the victim or indeed the perpetrator, the other is suicide as a way out.
I’ve just read a post where an anonymous poster is asking how to get out of an abusive relationship. She is being beaten a few times a day, in front of two small children. Do you know what the overall advice was in these comments? Save the money first. What. The. F*ck. I’m here to tell you that the ONLY thing that matters in this situation is finding a refuge space and getting the f*ck out. The ONLY thing. My escape went like this: July 2011. He punched and shouted at me in front of my 16 month old baby. I spent hours trying to convince him to let me go to my nans. I wasn’t allowed to leave unless he said usually but he had sunk into apology mode, crying about what he had done so this worked in my favour. He said he’d drop me there, give me two hours and collect me again. I got there, got straight on my nans laptop and googled help for women escaping abuse. It returned with lots of organisations. The first one I rang was The Dove Project and they found me a refuge space an hour away. They advised on things like turning my phone off and ensuring I’m not followed (he had a history of stalking me). I rang a cab, left baby with Nan while I went back to my home and frantically grabbed a few bottles and nappies. Literally to feed her for the journey. The only reason I went back was because I was 100% certain he wasn’t there and if he turned up, I had the cab driver as a witness. It was the scariest moments of my life. Then we were gone. Please listen to me when I say, whether he kills you or not, you’ll be dead one day. That money you save is no good if you’re dead. You’ve reached the hardest decision, you’re leaving. F*ing do it before it’s too late. Another tragic result for a young girl who simply saw no way out. We must do better for our kids, we need to understand the reality of online actions having offline consequences. As Susan McLean correctly points out, we must address this whether our child is a victim, but even more so if they are exhibiting bully behaviours. Role model what our expectations are, educate, manage the technology they use! The digital and physical worlds are one - we need to start acting like it. #ripella #bullying #safety #parenting #technology #qoria #ysafe ySafe by Qoria

Another young life lost due to the behavior of other teens online. This time a student from Lourdes Hill. Parents as well as keeping their kids safe MUST ensure that their child is NOT causing harm to others. Unless teens see consequences from school from home & Police their behavior will not change. The time for skirting this issue is well gone. Kids must learn poor choices will have consequences & that they will be held to account. Education to prevent & clear consequences with no excuses is required! RIP Ella. #cybersafety #dutyofcare #teenmentalhealth #onlineabuse #parenting #schoolleadership https://gofund.me/472611ff

It could’ve been me. It could’ve been you. It definitely could have been us. My sister and I are all too aware that, were it not for our very adoring grandparents, it could have been us facing childhood Christmases with very little to look forward to. No list to write, no anticipation to build, and not even any disappointment on the day because you can’t be disappointed when you know all along that nothing is coming your way. Although perhaps that’s not true, because maybe, just maybe we would have held out hope that Santa really did come to EVERYONE. And now we have the chance to make sure as many children as possible affected by domestic abuse get to feel the joy of Christmas. Samantha Haspell (my sister and associate with Safeguarding Associates for Excellence) is the CEO of DAVSS (Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services), a charity that supports anyone living with or affected with domestic abuse in the West Kent area. DAVSS rely on fundraising and grants to be able to deliver their service, providing those escaping domestic abuse with practical and emotional support, helping clients navigate the confusing court system as well as delivering recovery programmes for adults and children to give them the confidence to move on with life. And, with my marketing skills, I have the privilege of helping DAVSS to spread their message, raise awareness and get themselves in front of more people - people who need them and people who can support them. Between us, and the DAVSS team, we have formulated a plan and created a Toys for Christmas campaign. The aim is to provide at least one toy or gift for every child or young person (0-16) that has come into contact with the DAVSS service over the last year and if we can give more then that would be amazing. Last year there were almost 1000 cases with nearly 1500 children in the families, so it's a huge undertaking. Escaping domestic abuse can be life changing. On one hand it’s a huge relief to be away from abuse, but it can mean giving up your home, everything you’re familiar with, facing financial hardship and an uncertain path ahead. This is hard enough for adults, but it’s heartbreaking to think of the impact on the children. There are gifts on the Toys for Christmas campaign wish list from as little as a fiver - pretty much the cost of a fancy latte, and all we ask is that if you can, please take a look and see if there is something on that list that you could click “buy” on. https://lnkd.in/evC647eQ The process is simple - you click buy, it gets delivered to DAVSS and from there the parents who need support in providing presents for their children this Christmas will have access to our gifted toy collection, as well as wrapping and tags, so they can ensure that their house is filled with smiles on Christmas Day. A massive thank you to Safeguarding Associates for Excellence for sharing my words, sharing the campaign and their very generous donation.
We are delighted to share with you the fantastic work and this years Christmas campaign that our clients, and friends of SAFE, DAVSS (Domestic Abuse Volunteers Support Service) are busily working on! 🎄🎁 Please take the time to read the personal words from Jo Francis and click the link to make thousands of children smile this Christmas. Thank you to CEO of DAVSS and SAFE Associate Samantha Haspell for sharing and raising awareness! 💫 Wishlist - https://lnkd.in/eZrndfqk #DAVSS #Safeguardingchildren #christmas #AmazonWishList
