Can you remember your parents telling you not to eat fat? The reason being that saturated fat will clog up your arteries and give you a heart attack. This line of thinking is known as the diet-heart or lipid hypothesis. Sooner or later, it creates a vision in your mind that your arteries might resemble something like a clogged-up water pipe, leading to some people calling it the 'plumbing theory' of heart disease! With this in mind, when thinking whether fats are good or bad, it is a surprise for most people to learn that there is no verifiable scientific evidence to prove this theory! Last year, I had the opportunity to serve on an expert panel, providing my health equity expertise, about integrating a low-carb diet into the Dietary Guidelines. With evidence showing that many American adults face nutrition-related chronic diseases, there's agreement that integrating a lower-carbohydrate dietary pattern into the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can advance health equity across the board. Let's work towards a healthier future for all! Thanks to Maya Maroto, EdD, MPH, RD for leading this important effort. I am excited to say that the manuscript of the expert panel is now published. Check out the article here: https://lnkd.in/ecKGgZK5 What are your thoughts on integrating a low-carb diet pattern into the dietary guidelines? Let's discuss in the comments. #NutritionEquity #HealthEquity #BIPOCCOmmunities #LowerCarb

There are SO many diets out there—patients come to us totally confused and overwhelmed by what "diet" is appropriate. We actually don't love super restrictive diets for a variety of reasons, but when we begin working with people with chronic illness, cleaning up the diet is often essential as a starting point. The anti-inflammatory diet is a starting point that we often use. Listen in to hear about what it really is and why we use it so much. #antiinflammatory #inflammation #drmaura #naturopath #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathy #naturopathicdoctor #guthealthisreal #microbiome #rootcausemedicine #functionalmedicine
