Handling resistance from stakeholders who focus solely on tangible outcomes in L&D involves a strategic approach from someone who’s been in the L&D field for 20+ years: 1. Share Stories, Not Just Stats: Talk about real people who’ve grown because of L&D. Stories stick better than statistics. 2. Connect the Dots: Show how happy, skilled employees lead to the tangible results stakeholders love. It’s all connected. 3. Small Wins Matter: Start with a small program that shows both tangible and intangible wins. The proof is powerful. 4. Speak Their Language: Use terms that resonate with stakeholders. Talk about ‘returns’, ‘investment,’ ‘growth,’ and ‘competitive edge.’ 5. Improved Employee Retention: Employees who feel they are growing professionally with L&D initiatives are likely to stay with an organization for longer. 6. Improved or Consistent Employee Engagement Surveys: L&D initiatives directly influence employee engagement and retention. Hence, you should use metrics related to employee engagement to prove the worth of L&D. 7. Share only Relevant Info: Typically, stakeholders are busy professionals.
