The National Coordinating Committee – Swimming for Disabled People (NCC-SDP) has introduced a small grants fund aimed at increasing the involvement of disabled individuals in swimming activities. Grants of up to £500 are available to support innovative projects that provide life-changing support, impact, and insight. These grants are ideal for projects or clubs making a significant difference to a smaller group of individuals, rather than large-scale, one-off events. The focus is on fostering deeper inclusion and access to water, from hydrotherapy sessions to competitive para-swimming opportunities. While most grants will be up to £500, exceptionally innovative proposals may be considered for larger amounts. Generational beliefs, fears, and myths, combined with inequitable access to water resources and basic swim instruction, has left nearly 60% of Black and Brown children are unable to swim or uncomfortable in the deep end of the pool. Without the essential life skill of swimming, these children are 8 times greater risk of drowning. AquaMissions is determined to dispel the commonplace myths, fears and stereotypes about the dangers and inaccessibility of water and swimming and equip Black and LatinX children in Cleveland with access to life-saving water safety and swimming instruction. Following is a Policy Statement on the century-long problem of inequitable access to water resources and swim instruction for minorities, and recommendations to change the trajectory of water-related accidents and deaths among Black and Brown children in Cleveland.

Summer is here, and it's time to revisit water safety tips! At Friends of the Children - Houston, we know that children of color face a higher risk of drowning. Did you know 64% of Black and Indigenous kids do not know how to swim? This highlights the need for water safety education. Swimming lessons can reduce drowning risk by 88% for kids aged 1-4. However, access has been limited for many families of color. Check out your local YMCA that offers water safety and swimming lessons for youth and families in our community. Stay safe this summer! Remember: Always supervise children near water. Teach basic swimming skills. Use life jackets for young/inexperienced swimmers. Avoid alcohol when swimming/supervising swimmers. Enjoy the water safely! #WaterSafety #SummerSafety #FriendsHouston #YMCA #SwimLessons

Nearly 40% of Australian kids aren’t able to swim 50 metres or float for more than 2 minutes by age 12. This alarming trend has serious safety implications, especially as kids start swimming independently. "While many families introduce swimming early, children often leave lessons too soon—missing out on vital life-saving skills taught later," says Justin Scarr, CEO of Royal Life Saving Australia. Accessibility and cost are major barriers, making it tough for many to continue lessons as children grow. Let’s make water safety a priority for every child in Australia.
