Four lives were lost, and now another student has been taken from us. We must ask ourselves—what is happening to the mental and emotional state of our kids? What can we do to address these challenges earlier, rather than later? We need solutions that engage and protect our students, while also preventing weapons from ever entering the school environment. It’s clear we need a stronger, more proactive approach to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, teachers, and communities. Let’s come together to find real answers. As I work with schools interested in becoming Trauma Responsive, I first start with Comprehending the Prevalence and Impact of Trauma. Until all educators are area of how many students carry toxic stress, adversity and trauma into the school as well as what that looks like behaviorally in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds and other environements most adults are unable to shift away from the obedience model of discipline found in most schools. Here in New Jersey Public Schools that shift will need to address statistics like these: In and Out of School Suspensions- 2022-2023= #61,132 Missed School Days that year= 222,110 days from suspension. This is an example of: PAIN BASED BEHAVIOR TREATED WITH PAIN! What does your state's data show?

By July 1, 2025 all schools will be required to have a trained Behavioral Threat Assessment Team. The Coalition for Transforming School Safety (formerly the Police out of Schools Coalition) created a Behavioral Threat Assessment toolkit that helps parents and students know their rights. Thanks to Vermont Legal Aid for leading the research on this project. The toolkit answers the following questions: ☀ When can a behavioral threat assessment be done? ☀ Can behavioral threat assessments lead to suspension and expulsion? ☀ What rights do students with IEPs or 504 plans have? ☀ How can I get support if a student I know is undergoing a Behavioral Threat Assessment?
