We strongly urge the Government to honour its commitment to ensuring all people with disability are at the centre of reform and we do this this in collaboration with those whose lives are directly impacted. We want to ensure that ALL people with disability are safeguarded as a priority. We know this is also important to the Australian government. We are deeply concerned that negative outcomes due to unintended consequences will not be avoidable. https://lnkd.in/g2maVSrE

The NDIS is going through a major overhaul and it’s critical that reform leads to better and fairer outcomes for people with disability. PIAC Senior Solicitors Mitchell Skipsey and Sheetal Balakrishnan are appearing at today’s Senate Inquiry into the Government’s ‘Getting the NDIS Back on Track’ Bill to give constructive feedback to improve the draft legislation. Our recommendations to the Government include: - cementing the Government’s commitment to co-design with the disability community through amendments to the Bill and accompanying materials; - protecting choice and control for people with disability by implementing safeguards against misuse of the new NDIA powers given by the Bill; and - ensuring participants have a right to receive and challenge a draft needs assessment before it is finalised by the NDIA. We make 33 specific and detailed recommendations to improve the Bill in our submission, which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/g4feNH7T

So, in a world where the NDIA acts shocked—shocked!—to find that there are issues within the #disability sector, we find ourselves pondering the cosmic ballet of accountability. It's a bit like saying, "We only organize the party, we don't control the playlist," despite owning the speakers, the Spotify account, and having written half the songs. The NDIA, with all the innocence of a fox in a henhouse, professes a keen interest in the findings of the #DisabilityRoyalCommission, all while maintaining an arm's length that would make even a seasoned limbo champion envious. Now, isn't it a bit rich for the NDIA to act as though the #transformative changes recommended by the commission are akin to suggestions on a comment card, rather than urgent imperatives? The NDIA, in their dazzling #independence, seems to forget that they are not just another bystander at the scene of the crime but potentially holding the smoking gun. The government, bless their cotton socks, will "formally respond" by mid-2024, giving the impression of action in the same way a mime suggests a glass wall. Meanwhile, the NDIA, caught between a rock and a hard place—also known as 'public expectation' and 'actual responsibility'—might consider this a nudge to perhaps, just maybe, take a starring role in the screenplay titled "Fixing Our Own Backyard: The Thrilling Saga of Actually Doing Something." It begs the question: If the NDIA were a superhero, would their power be invisibility? Only appearing to save the day when the spotlight's on them, and fading into bureaucratic obscurity the moment real action is required? It’s time for the #NDIA to step up and own their part in this narrative, turning those #recommendations into actions faster than you can say, "But we're waiting on the government." After all, in the grand theatre of public service, it's one thing to have a front-row seat; it's another to be on stage, making the changes happen. #ndis #australiangovernment
