It’s International Day of People with Disability and this year the focus is on making a better future for all by supporting more people with disability to become leaders. The Australian Curriculum promotes inclusive teaching and supports all students to achieve their full potential. The CASE (Curriculum, Abilities, Standards, Evaluation) model helps teachers to make adjustments to teaching and learning plans, ensuring that every student receives rigorous, relevant and engaging learning experiences. Why does neurodiversity matter in education? In Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) covers the legislative requirements for ensuring people with a disability in education do not face discrimination, as well as in many other contexts. By recognizing neurodiversity and taking a neurodiversity-affirming approach to education, educators can challenge stigma and prevent discrimination often faced by disabled students who identify as neurodivergent. Recognizing and valuing neurodiversity ensures that all students, regardless of how their brains function, have equal opportunities to learn and succeed. It moves away from a one-size-fits-all approach and promotes a more inclusive learning environment where diverse ways of thinking and learning are celebrated. Educational institutions have an ethical responsibility to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students. Embracing neurodiversity aligns with a commitment to social justice and equal opportunity. Neurodiversity-affirming practices can benefit all students, not just those who identify as neurodivergent. By creating a more inclusive and flexible learning environment, higher education institutions can foster a culture of diversity and appreciation for different ways of thinking and learning. Microsoft famously promotes the concept of 'solve for one - extend to many'. #neurodiversity #education #disability #DEI #antidiscrimination
