There's a lot of content out there. And we're about to get a lot more with genAI tools pumping out exponential volumes. It was hard getting learner attention before with learning libraries, curation platforms, etc., and it's going to get a lot harder. So what can you do to capture learner attention and help them develop the critical skills they need to be successful? One proven idea: provide learners with experiences that are relevant, enable them to learn with their peers, and allow them to practice and apply skills directly to their work. This is very useful information for transitioning military personnel. Start the process early, allow yourself time to conduct your research and connect with the right organizations.
To the individuals out there seeking to take advantage of the DoD Skillbridge program, I have some points to share with you: - Start your search early for potential organizations you wish to intern with; 1 year or more out from retirement or separation is a good starting point. - Not all companies want a free, non-paid intern or employee. Move on and do not keep pursing one organization. - Get a “pre-approval” from your command before you lock in with a company. This will make it easier on you and your potential Skillbridge employer to tailor an appropriate training plan in your specified timeline. - If you want to add a company that is not approved by the DoD, start 2 years out. Skillbridge applications for organizational onboarding only occurs twice a year. - Seek guidance and/or help from your servicing education office if you have questions about applying in AFVEC, for Air Force members, before submitting your application. Once submitted, it cannot be changed, thus starting over again—not a big deal, but can be time consuming. I unfortunately did not start my search early enough, nor was I as aggressive as I should have been. Although it may seem like a relatively easy process for an organization to take on free labor, I echo again, it is not always that simple. Some organizations just to not want to invest the time and energy, especially if they are more prone to internal hires moving up the chain. I hope this reaches you well.
