The CMA has confirmed that it will launch a formal market investigation into the veterinary sector. This is potentially serious for vet practices, as the CMA states it intends to explore whether: - Consumers are getting the information they need, at the right time, to make informed decisions. - A limited choice of vet businesses in certain areas is impacting pet owners. - Profits earned are consistent with the levels expected in a competitive market. - Vet businesses have the incentive and ability to limit consumer choice when providing treatments or recommending related services, particularly when they are part of large integrated groups. - The regulatory framework is preventing the market from functioning as well as it could. The CMA states that potential remedies could include: - Mandating the provision of certain information to consumers - Imposing maximum prescription fees - Ordering the sale or disposal of a business or assets Remedies would be legally enforceable. The CMA can also make recommendations to government, e.g. proposing changes to the regulatory framework

I am excited to enhance my skills by signing up for the RECOVER Initiative BLS & ALS course today. It's been on my radar for a while, and with the new 2024 guidelines in place, now feels like the perfect time to enrol. Staying current on the latest BLS & ALS practices is crucial, but for me, it underscores the importance of taking a proactive approach to anaesthesia patient care - focusing on Detecting, Preventing, and Mitigating risks. Veterinary nurses and support staff can have a significant impact by implementing some key (yet straightforward) strategies to enhance patient safety and reduce stress levels for clients and the team 🙂. By conducting a thorough patient evaluation (physical assessment, client questioning), identifying risks, using the ASA physical status classification, assessing temperament and BCS, establishing baseline readings, and 'optimising patients' prior to anaesthesia, we can create personalised patient plans that prioritise safety and well-being. - Review past records - Complete the checklist for EVERY patient 💡 Designate a 'patient risk communication champion'! 💡

Curiosity. What I learned today. I got an email from Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society (VECCS) today about the new RECOVER guidelines, only to find the RECOVER Initiative released them two weeks ago! Great info here, click their links! Key updates include: • Chest Compression Techniques: Enhanced methods for cats and small dogs to optimize survival during cardiac arrest. • Compression Depths and Techniques: Adjustments tailored to an animal's size and chest shape, improving CPR effectiveness. • Breathing Support Methods: Revised for non-intubated patients, focusing on rescuer safety. • Medication Dosages and Procedures: Updated for more precise and effective treatment during CPR.

I don’t believe this will be a popular post, but I think it’s important to mention… I have nothing against dogs—well-behaved ones, that is! 🐕 However, this summer, I’ve noticed more dogs in public places, and it’s bringing some challenges. One major issue is dog mess. It’s disgusting when some owners don’t clean up after their pets, making it unpleasant for people walking and for children who might come into contact with it. Another problem is dogs running loose. Dogs not on leads can be dangerous, especially for children who might not be aware of approaching animals. Uncontrolled dogs can lead to accidents or confrontations, and aggressive dogs pose a serious safety risk. It’s also common to see dogs in restaurants, sometimes even sitting on chairs. This can be an issue for people with allergies or those who don’t want to eat around pets. The situation can get worse when people bring multiple dogs into confined spaces like on holiday in caravans. Constant barking is a big disturbance. This problem also extends to supermarkets and other shops. There’s an assumption that everyone loves dogs, but some people may be afraid of them or simply aren’t fond of them. Proper training helps improve dog behaviour, making public spaces more enjoyable for all. Respecting different preferences and being aware of these issues is key to ensuring everyone’s well-being. (And to be clear I am not talking about Service dogs. In the UK they are protected under the Equality Act 2010, which allows them access to public places and services to support their handlers—they are always wonderfully behaved, well-trained, and are a lifeline for those who rely on them) 👉 Do we need clear guidelines and considerate practices to balance the enjoyment of dogs as pets with the needs and comfort of others in shared spaces? https://lnkd.in/ewfxzist
