Hypertension - high blood pressure. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Medical Acupuncture showed that acupuncture is effective in reducing blood pressure either used as a treatment on its own or in conjunction with blood pressure medications. The combination of acupuncture and antihypertensive medications can lead to a significant reduction in the dosage of medication and also the medication side effects. In ancient Chinese medicine texts written around 2600 BCE, high blood pressure was diagnosed as hard pulse disease. After taking a comprehensive history, your acupuncturist will diagnose a specific Chinese medicine “pattern” that is based on the symptoms that you are experiencing. From this established diagnosis, a treatment principle will be designed to match your individual treatment needs. Specific acupuncture points that will treat the “pattern” will be explained before treatment so that your informed consent to that treatment can be given. Combining acupuncture and western blood pressure medication in your treatment plan can lead to reduced dosage and side effects. Acupuncture has been shown to be more effective than sham acupuncture in reducing methadone dose and decreasing opioid craving in individuals with opioid use disorder, according to a randomized clinical trial conducted in MMT clinics in China. The study found that after 8 weeks of acupuncture treatment, a higher proportion of participants achieved a significant reduction in methadone dose compared to those who received sham acupuncture. Additionally, acupuncture was also more successful in reducing opioid craving. ✨ Acupuncture proves its mettle against chronic sciatica 🦴 New research out of a multicenter randomized clinical trial in China provides compelling evidence that acupuncture can significantly relieve pain and improve function in patients with chronic sciatica from herniated lumbar discs. 🔍 Key Findings: - VAS pain score decreased by 30.8 mm in the acupuncture group vs. 14.9 mm in the sham group at 4 weeks. - Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) dropped by 13 points in the acupuncture group vs. 4.9 points in the sham group at 4 weeks. Benefits were sustained through 52 weeks, with no serious adverse events. This study shows that acupuncture offers more than just placebo effects, providing meaningful improvements in both pain relief and disability. Given the scarcity of effective non-surgical interventions, acupuncture should be seriously considered as a treatment option for individuals with chronic sciatica. 💡 Takeaway: For patients suffering from sciatica, acupuncture may unlock long-term relief—and it’s safe too!
