As a part of life science, #AgBio doesn't get the same attention as biopharma, but we all gotta eat! And we rarely think about where our food comes from and what it takes to get it to us. This week's episode of cc: Life Science looks behind the scenes of the global fresh fruit industry. I spoke to Tristan Kaye from It's Fresh! about the challenges of transporting fruit across the globe. Did you know that growers get paid for what arrives at the destination market rather than what they pick and ship? And fruit can be in a shipping container for weeks! There are other factors as well. Traffic through the Panama Canal is currently restricted due to low water levels in Lake Gatun (drought). That is just one example of the unpredictability of getting fruit to market. It's Fresh! offers a solution to control ethylene during shipment. Ethylene is a plant hormone that signals maturation and ripening. It's also released by damaged fruit. It works at concentrations of parts per billion so controlling it is essential to keep fruit from spoiling on its way to your table. I found this fascinating. Guess who is the dominant producer & exporter of orange in the world? Besides being the undisputed World Champion producer and exporter for sugar and soybean, Brazil is holding another World Champion title with dominant supplies of nearly 70% of the global orange market! This year's harvest in Brazil is expected to be down by 24%, the third consecutive difficult harvest, mainly due to citrus greening disease affecting 38% of Brazil's orange trees in 2023. Brazil's São Paulo region offers ideal conditions for orange cultivation, making it the leading exporter. While the US is the largest total consumer of orange juice, the UK has the highest per capita consumption, at around 12 litres per person annually. Are you in the orange trade? It's story time!📚 Once upon a time in the 13th century, “Inca” (now the Chilean region), began making #Chuño (freeze-dried Potato).🥔 People there wanted to preserve Potatoes and extend their shelf life. They did so by subjecting the #Potatoes to below-freezing temperatures on Andean Mountain peaks during the evening, then during the day, they were dried in the sun and this way, the water was squeezed out. Southern African Citrus Export Season Wrap-Up: A Resilient Performance Despite Challenges 🍊 Southern African citrus growers packed 164.5 million 15kg cartons for global markets in the 2024 export season, reflecting a marginal 600,000-carton decline compared to last year. CGA CEO Justin Chadwick attributed this resilience to the industry's ability to adapt to extreme weather events, smaller fruit sizes, and increased demand for locally processed oranges, which diverted 6 million cartons to juice production. Key highlights include: 🔸 Mandarins: 41.6M cartons (+3.6M from 2023) 🔸 Valencia Oranges: 48.7M cartons (-4.7M from 2023) 🔸 Lemons: 34.7M cartons (-1.1M from 2023) Port efficiency remains a critical concern, with industry leaders emphasizing the need for public-private partnerships to unlock the sector's potential. Here is the scoop from our latest #MarketUpdate🥑: Our Vice President of Sourcing and Farming Operations Kellen Newhouse steps up with a snapshot of anticipated avocado volume and supply trends: Currently, Mexico is dominating the avocado supply to the States with good sizing and quality. Mexico will have a good supply into the spring, but heading into summer, we anticipate pressure on the market as supply dwindles. Colombia is seeing a strong market in Europe and strong demand in the United States for the limited amount of fruit remaining in its current crop. By April/May, we will see good numbers coming out of Colombia into the United States to offset a small California crop, weakening Mexican volume, and a late Peru harvest. A small amount of early-harvest fruit started to trickle in from California before the Big Game kickoff, but we should see an increase in supply heading into April. #WestPakAvocado #Avocados #IndustryUpdate
