The map shows the states where we haven't yet served anyone with Changing Focus: Moving From We to Me. In January, Michigan was among those states...but, we have an alum there now. This is where I'm hoping my 🤞who-luck🤞 works. It's a term coined by my friend and mentor, John C. Maxwell, that refers to the people you come across accidentally or because you got yourself to the right place OR because you asked someone the question, "Who do you know that I should know?" Today, that's what I'm doing...and, yes, if you're reading this, I'm asking YOU. WHO do you know who should participate in a cohort of Changing Focus: Moving From We to Me? It's for service members and military spouses, of all ranks from all services, who are transitioning to the civilian sector, AND veterans of any era who want to reset their transition...in the virtual arena. What should someone who participates in a cohort expect to do or get? They'll spend 24 hours over four days with us, 🍏 Discovering why change is so challenging and how to use their mind to overcome it, 🍏 Finding their purpose and create a vision plan for their future, and 🍏 Learning about living an intentional life, one filled with THEIR purpose. 🍏 They'll take communications and financial assessments to better understand their behaviors and habits, and 🍏 Receive individual resume and LinkedIn profile reviews. 🍏 Along the way, they'll play with Lego bricks and paint! 🥳 It's FREE to all participants. The hilarious meme aside, loss of identity and purpose is a very real thing and, yes, it can feel like a freight train hitting when least expected. #veteranshelpingveterans I would argue it feels more like an infected wound that refuses to heal. The process can be extremely slow, annoyingly painful, and can have serious consequences if left unchecked. What worked for me was seeing and experiencing how other countries deal with it. As an example, in Israel (gross oversimplification ahead), for better or for worse, post-military service mentalities are nowhere similar to ours. I’ve tried multiple times to speak with Israelis about their military service and I can best describe it as asking an American about working at Stop and Shop; it’s just an experience. Obviously, the ‘mandated’ element of Israel’s military service plays a huge role in the backdrop behind U.S. voluntary military service, but I suspect it’s more than just that. Individual results may differ! But seeing military service treated as taking out the garbage (with no special or endearing treatment, no stickers, unit patches, bumper stickers, rank, or license plates), was strange at first — almost uncaring or depressing — but it actually helped me understand that although it is not ‘nothing’, it is merely a ‘chapter’ in a long life. In other words, I view the veteran identity as a dial more so than an on/off switch, and I avoid those who treat it as a switch like the plague. We have 'speaking AS A VETERAN' memes for a reason; there's a kernel of truth to our identity politics—unique to the United States (I follow all the ‘as a veteran’ folks in D.C., and, for me, having broken away from that mentality and the silly internal squabbles, I’ve freed up a lot of the ‘lack of identity’ issues I faced years ago because it was merely a chapter, not the entire book of my life. I’m also not the only one who has figured this out; I have a long list of professionals I follow who express similar opinions. Jeff's Short (not quite a blog 👨🚀): It’s almost Veterans Day, so it’s time to talk about its purpose compared to the other two days people confuse. Veterans Day is to recognize those that served and are still living (like me). Memorial Day is a day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Armed Forces Day celebrates those currently in the military and their families.   On Monday, November 11, we collectively thank our veterans, old and young alike, for their defense and support of our constitution, courage to serve and protect our country, and bravery to stand up during difficult times.   Another important way to honor veterans is to support their endeavors. Look for the veteran-owned businesses. There are approximately two million that create five million jobs in the US. You’ll find veteran-owned businesses in construction, retail, healthcare, accommodations, food service, real estate, transportation, finance, and more. Check for those verified as Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) or Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) like Commercial Equities Group. Honoring Our Heroes on Veterans Day On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who have selflessly served in our nation's armed forces. Let's take a moment to explore the history and significance of this special day. Veterans Day is a federal holiday observed on November 11th of each year to honor all of America's veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Today, we celebrate and give thanks to all veterans for their service, sacrifices, courage, patriotism, and love of this country. Veterans Day is linked to the "Great War" or World War I, which ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Originally, the holiday commemorated the armistice or cease-fire day that ended World War I between the Allies and Germany. President Wilson commemorated this day as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919. Armistice Day officially was ended by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954, and it became Veterans Day to commemorate American veterans of all wars. As we commemorate this day, we express our deepest gratitude to veterans for their service, valor, and resilience. We recognize the transferable skills and qualities they bring to the workforce. This week, I was disheartened to see military personnel criticizing fellow service members and even accusing them of "stolen valor." Although I didn't personally serve, my family has a long history of military service, and I know this is one of the worst charges you can make against a veteran. It's troubling to see this kind of rhetoric gaining traction recently—something that would have been unthinkable just a decade ago. My father served in the Air Force for 20 years, including a year in Vietnam in 1968. His role was in administration, but his commitment to our country was just as strong as anyone's. My uncle, a Marine in World War II, was among the first to land on the beach at Guadalcanal, where he faced intense combat, even hand-to-hand. Does this make his service more valuable than my father's? Absolutely not. Both enlisted, both served, and both made significant sacrifices— themselves and their families. This brings me back to a post I made a few weeks ago about Service. Do I value J.D. Vance's work in Silicon Valley more than his service to our country? I do not. One is about generating wealth, while the other is about serving a higher purpose—America and its people. It's time we move away from personal attacks (as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, including my thoughts on Vice President Harris) and refocus on the issues that truly matter. For me, those issues include bodily autonomy, healthcare, personal freedom, mental health, and climate change. July 25th is 'Hire a Veteran Day' - a day we at RecruitMilitary hold dear, but would like to reimagine. Here's how we'd transform this important day: First, we’d rename it to “Hire from the Military Community Day,” to honor military community spouses, who often exhibit the same leadership and resilience that distinguishes veterans. Second, we’d shift the narrative from a charitable act to a strategic business decision. Hiring from the military community isn’t just a noble cause; it's a savvy business move. Veterans and their spouses bring unmatched leadership qualities, resilience, and the ability to thrive under pressure - traits cultivated in an environment unlike any found in the civilian world. So to all employers: this July 25th, let’s not just recognize Hire a Veteran Day. Let’s expand it to appreciate the entire military community and understand the profound business value they bring.
