In April, the African Intellectual Property Organisation (OAPI) and its partners convened a symposium in Douala, Cameroon, centered around the theme of “Geographical Indications in Africa: Current Situation and Development Prospects”. It has been a thrilling event. I had the opportunity to be invited as a panellist at the International Colloquium for the Development of Geographical Indication for Africa at Duala, Cameroon. The Director of Nigeria trademarks was also present. We had almost all the experts, leaders, and representatives present. Experiences from African countries were shared as well as those from EU, China, and others. Strategies and challenges were discussed, and I am equipped with the prospects and challenges faced by every, and I mean every country. For Nigeria, we discovered that we have taken quite a communal, indigenous and hollistic approach, even if this has slowed down the conclusion of the draft bill on GI (Ethiopia took the fast train within 1year). Albeit, the finalisation will be concluded this year and the last webinar on this will be held in May. After this, the technical working group will conclude the draft and a physical-wide stakeholders finalisation hearing will be called (perhaps in July or September). I hope everyone of us who value Nigerian products and cultural services will be present. And yes, before I forget, one of our products the Nsukka Yellow Pepper was brought at the instance of AfrIPI, and used for the dinner event and many savoured the meal happily. Other products from Nigeria were also sampled. The Commissioner recalled his experience in Nsukka, and praised the Nsukka Yellow Pepper. It is also exciting to know that our brothers, Cameroon, have gone a long way in cracking GI and have started reaping some financial benefits after initial challenges. It was my pleasure reconnecting with the DG of OAPI, Monique Bagal , and other colleagues from AfrIPi and EUIPO. #geographicalindication #intellectualproperty #nigeria

An article in the New Times by Tesi Kaven on our annual regional meeting last week in Yaounde - a joint meeting with our Central African colleagues. It was a great opportunity for the exchange of perspectives between representatives from government, private sector and the civil society from the two sub-regions - an opportunity that doesn't often come around often. The main theme of the conference was on innovation and R&D, but the article focusses on the prospects for the regional economy... https://lnkd.in/dJY5kjJx

In the 501st edition of the #Mozambique Weekly Media Review, we introduce our readers to refreshed newsletter with a new look and feel – yet staying true to the established character of Focus Group’s Mozambique Weekly. The more streamlined format aims to heighten the focus on our analysis, providing readers with more insights and context on current events in Mozambique. This week, we consider the slow registration process amid potentially unattractive election options. Particularly few insurgent-led incidents were reported over the past week, attesting to the lull observed during this Islamic holy month. IDPs may be among the most exposed to the insurgency’s brutality; how might this exposure influence their mental state, especially with regards to potential violent tendencies? And, a study of Mozambique’s apparent growing dependency on foreign actors to develop its natural resources and to safeguard the same resources points to neo-colonialist tendencies. We discuss this and more in the 501st edition of the Mozambique Weekly Media Review. For more information on #FocusGroup's Information Services contact us at infoservice@focusgrp.co

From November 5th to 8th, 2024, the African Technology Policy Studies (ATPS) Network hosted a transformative High-Level Policy Dialogue in Abuja, Nigeria! This milestone event marked a key moment for the Strengthening the National Research and Innovation Funding Agencies in West Africa (SRIFA) Project, uniting efforts from six West African countries: Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. Nigeria, being the only country yet to establish a research and innovation funding council, was at the heart of impactful discussions led by distinguished leaders. This dialogue paved the way for collaborative partnerships, strategic alignment, and actionable steps toward setting up a National Research and Innovation Funding Council in Nigeria. Such an achievement will undoubtedly elevate Nigeria's role in the global research and innovation landscape. Check out highlights from this event. ✨New findings ✨ Our latest research on Cameroon shows that to improve the economic situation in the country, specific targets for domestic savings need to be incorporated into national development plans. This would allow policies aiming to strengthen domestic savings to be enshrined into legislation. https://go.unu.edu/kmfWM #DRMprogramme #SDG17
