Thank you to everyone who attended our side event on glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) at #COP29! Yesterday, experts worldwide gathered at the Cryosphere Pavilion to discuss the urgent need for multi-hazard risk management solutions to address GLOFs, a critical climate risk in regions like the Hindu Kush Himalayas and Andes. This event underscored the importance of cross-border collaboration and local adaptation efforts to protect vulnerable mountain communities. 🌐 Missed it? Proud to be recognised in the latest European Climate Risk Assessment report by the European Environment Agency (EEA)! 📚 Recent EEA report highlights our project, guiding scientists and practitioners in multi-risk assessment. MYRIAD-HES database provides flood event insights, aiding risk management. As climate and socio-economic changes escalate, multiple hazards become more likely. MYRIAD-EU contributes to European resilience by mitigating floods and disaster chains. The climate emergency is the biggest ever economic, social and environmental threat facing the planet and humanity. The global and interconnected risk landscape therefore requires integrated solutions that address cascading and interrelated risks. A multi-hazard early warning system is such a solution and is a key element of a comprehensive DRR strategy. This Words into Action guide aims to promote greater implementation of these critical systems across all sectors to protect the most exposed populations from disasters. #DRR

It's vital to collaborate to adapt to climate change. This week, SEPA and Met Office have jointly invited partners and experts to share experiences, insights and tools at the Scottish Flood Forecasting Symposium to learn more about what our communities need from our forecasting and warning services and how we can build future capabilities. Here at SEPA, through our flood risk management services, we aim to avoid, protect and warn. We play a lead role in preparing Scotland for a changing climate.

Climate change may overwhelmingly be a global challenge, but Zurich’s John Scott emphasizes that risk managers must always consider the local risks. For instance, flooding can create losses worldwide, but the risks are manifested locally and must be addressed as such. Excited to share that I've recently completed the Thought Leadership Course on Synergizing Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) offered by United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) This comprehensive program highlighted the critical connections and potential for reinforcement between Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA). Aligning these processes within national strategies optimizes resource use and enhances countries' ability to address risk. #DRR #CCA #ThoughtLeadership #Sustainability

Day 2/4 of the youth innovations climate change workshop . On yesterday's topic we talked about "Environmental risk management."This involves looking at environmental impacts that may happen in future and finding a solution to it before it happens, it focuses on: 1. Mitigation 2.Providing a solution for something that may happen in future. We later talked about crisis management, you may ask what crisis management is? Well crisis management is a systematic process that deals with mitigating, assessing and identifying the crisis, a crisis affects individuals,a community,a country and the world at large. Here are some examples of crises: 1. _Natural Disasters: - Earthquakes - Hurricanes - Floods - Wildfires 2. _Economic Crises: - Stock market crashes - Bank failures 3. _Health Crises: - Pandemics (e.g., COVID-19) - Epidemics (e.g., Ebola) - Food and water contamination 4. _Environmental Crises: - Oil spills - Climate change-related disasters( drought) - Deforestation In all this ,it is essential for a nation to proactively plan at community level and as a nation on what needs to be done before we encounter a crisis. #greencosmoszambia #americanspaces #USEmbassy #SustainableFuture #sustainabledevelopment #grencosmoszambia #usembassyzambia
