10/21/24 10:45CDT Ottumwa, Iowa Dr.Pepper/Snapple Group: I’m docked at the Dr.Pepper plant in Ottumwa, Iowa. My appointment is scheduled for 15:00 but, to my luck, they’re running ahead today. If all goes well, I’ll be in Denver with almost twelve hours to spare. If you haven’t seen my previous post, I wouldn’t be surprised. However, I mention that I’m worried the refrigerator will make my drive axles overweight. A reefer weighs a thousand pounds more, at the head, than a regular “dry-van” trailer. This load weighs 45,000lbs, the maximum capacity for a dry-van. When your maxed, sliding the trailer wheels forward, to move the weight backwards, and visa versa, won’t help. My only chance is that the estimate was high. Otherwise this will be a long day that will involve me explaining to a bunch of warehouse people that they get to do more work because I showed up with a reefer instead of a dry-van, as clearly outlined in the instructions (see Oct. 20th, paragraph 2). Pella, Iowa 18:30 CDT Casey’s General Store: With my tandems all the way forward, my drive axles were 2,750lbs over the legal limit. Luckily, there was a DQ next door, with a west-facing patio at sunset, to help me cope. I wasn’t about to pass this opportunity up to drive back to the shipper. Moments like these are what keep you not “alive” but “living” in this line of work. The silver lining: the weight was so poorly distributed, it wouldn’t have mattered if I brought the right trailer. My Dad compares me to Earnest Hemingway, because of the adventures nature of my job, but Hemingway was a writer so I have bit work to do if I want that to be true. It’s easy to make this life sound interesting at a barbeque or over a game of pool, where you give a quick sinopsis and a summary of your best moments. But adapting this life to a book is an entirely different undertaking, one that requires a lot of time and effort, so you can expect to see a lot of posts like this on my profile for a while, as a bit of an experiment/ hobby. You need them out here. I just finished getting reloaded. The plan is to grab breakfast at this restaurant again then head to the town of Pella, 33 miles to the Northwest. That’s where the nearest scale is. If I’m legal, I’ll shoot up to Interstate 80 and start heading to Denver. If not, It’ll probably be another day like today, full of waiting, with nothing to do other than the tasks I give myself, and nobody to keep me company. The good news is that last scale ticket showed my gross weight at seventy-eight thousand pounds, two thousand less than the limit. It’s not a big margin, one pallet at some places, but it’s not hopless. With any luck I’ll still make good time.
