Key Takeaways for E-Commerce Optimization in 2024 DHL, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, recently published a series of insightful reports on e-commerce trends. By surveying 12,000 shoppers across 24 countries, they revealed what really matters to online consumers and why they abandon their carts. Here are some highlights from the series, “Why do online shoppers really abandon their baskets?” Top frustrations for online shoppers: 31% say not enough product images 36% say not enough product information 37% are frustrated by paying for returns 46% cite long delivery times 54% are put off by high delivery costs What would improve the shopping experience: 39% want more customer reviews and images 41% prefer better product descriptions 42% seek faster delivery 48% look for free returns 67% want free delivery Think about your own shopping behavior: when there are multiple images, detailed descriptions, and authentic customer reviews, the buying decision is much easier. Make sure the product page has all the information customers need to feel confident. Include information on delivery times, costs, and return policies directly on the product detail page or with a sticky element. If delivery or returns are free, highlight it at every step to reassure the customer. If there are fees, provide clear reasons & transparency helps to build trust. Don´t hide any relevant information about costs and don´t make it too complex. Consider offering a discount or voucher (more than the usual 5 or 10 %) for first-time customers. This small gesture can reduce perceived risk and encourage new buyers to make their first purchase. If they’re happy and subscribe to your newsletter, they’re more likely to become repeat customers. New customers often choose the store that feels the least risky. Highlight what sets your shop apart, such as quality customer service, excellent reviews, and a clear return policy. Shoppers want to feel like they’re making a safe choice where others are happy with their purchases.
