Last week, R2D2-MH Project researchers Prof. Sven Bölte and Dr. Melissa Black from Karolinska Institutet attended the EUNETHYDIS annual meeting. 🙌 Dr. Melissa Black presented recent work on the biological, psychological and social factors contributing to #resilience and positive life outcomes in #ADHD. Sven Bölte is currently co-chair of EUNETHYDIS steering committee. EUNETHYDIS is a network that aims to facilitate high quality science on #ADHD and its wider impact. It gathers researchers and clinicians across Europe in the spirit of openness, trust and support. We are very pleased of these exchanges as we share the common goal to generate new knowledge of #ADHD and provide healthcare professionals and clinicians with a better understanding and new tools to better support people with ADHD and families. Having a detailed report that shows different aspects of how ADHD is presenting in a patient can serve as a support for your clinical decisions. Our objective ADHD technology provides institutions with crucial patient data. QbTest reports are time and date-stamped, providing a record of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity at the time of testing. You can use this data to compare your patients with an age and sex-matched normative group and also their personal test history. This can be useful when assessing symptom change over time, managing medication, and tracking variance in outcomes from clinic to clinic. Last week, our CEO Louise Cowpertwait (Dr) and RNZ reporter Luka Forman discussed how MindMatters Clinic launched NZs first national telehealth service to improve access to ADHD diagnostic assessments. We are so proud of what we have achieved: Using technology to provide access to leading clinical experts across the country, we have been able to eliminate painful wait times from over a year down to a couple of weeks! We've also unlocked access for those who live in more rural areas. 💖 However, there is still much to do. Many people can't afford an assessment and access to funding is extremely limited. Here's what one person told us: "My husband is a kindy teacher on $70k. I earn far more than him ($115k) but we still can't afford for me to be assessed! .We are reasonably well off relatively speaking, and yet the cost of an assessment is too much of a stretch for us." One part of the solution supported by ADHD New Zealand and The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners is for GPs to have a pathway to become specialist assessors, kind of how some can assess for skin cancer. We support this! However, GP time is also limited and not every GP would get trained in this so it can't be the whole solution. It didn't make the cut from the interview, but we believe health tech solutions will be a game changer: Clever, clinically safe and secure AI solutions could dramatically reduce the amount of time needed for an assessment, whoever is doing it. So much of an assessment is information gathering and this could be automated followed by a briefer, tailored interpretation and final assessment with a clinician. The tech isn't there yet, but we don't think it is far off. Ngā mihi (thanks) Luka Forman and Checkpoint presenter Lisa Owen for shedding light on this important topic. _____ Kia ora 👋 We're MindMatters Clinic: NZ leading clinical experts supporting organisations across Aotearoa with all things mental health and wellbeing. To my neurodiversity academic colleagues! I'm in the process of finalising a paper explaining and exploring the benefits and criticisms of the two dominant paradigms of ADHD within healthcare (Biomedical Construction Versus Neurodiversity Social Model). The core purpose is about giving professionals an understanding of these two paradigms and why different people may prefer one to the other (or a more nuanced approach). Looking for advice on where might be the best place to seek to publish journal-wise? Prof. Amanda Kirby Rob Edwards Tony Lloyd PhD FRSA #adhd #neurodiversity #adhdacademic

Neurodivergence in healthcare is becoming a pivotal focus in creating inclusive, patient-centered care environments. Neurodivergent individuals, such as those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other cognitive differences, often face unique challenges in healthcare settings. Sensory sensitivities, differences in communication, and varying needs in social interaction can influence the healthcare experience. Healthcare professionals must be equipped to understand these needs and make necessary adjustments to provide effective and empathetic care. For example, a neurodivergent patient may benefit from extra time during appointments or clear, straightforward communication that minimizes sensory overload. By implementing these practices, healthcare systems can foster environments where patients feel comfortable and understood, leading to better health outcomes. Equally important is recognizing and supporting neurodivergent professionals within the healthcare workforce. These individuals bring unique insights and innovations that can enhance patient care. By normalizing neurodivergence and providing adequate support, the healthcare industry can create a more diverse, inclusive, and effective system that serves everyone equally. #Neurodivergence #InclusiveHealthcare #NeurodiversityInMedicine #PatientCenteredCare #HealthcareInnovation #MentalHealthAwareness #AutismAcceptance #ADHD #Dyslexia #HealthcareAdvocacy
