Adivasi Lives Matter’s Post

December 22 is celebrated as Bhasa Diwas or Santali Language Day in India to honor the inclusion of Santali in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution on this day in 2003, granting it official status as one of India's 22 scheduled languages. With approximately 7.6 million speakers (2011 Census), Santali is spoken in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. It ranks as the third most-spoken Austroasiatic language globally, after Vietnamese and Khmer, and serves as the second state language in Jharkhand and West Bengal. Originally an oral language, Santali gained a written form through the Ol Chiki script, developed by Pandit Raghunath Murmu in 1925.
