December 22 is celebrated as Bhasa Diwas or Santali Language Day in India to honor the inclusion of Santali in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution on this day in 2003, granting it official status as one of India's 22 scheduled languages. With approximately 7.6 million speakers (2011 Census), Santali is spoken in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. It ranks as the third most-spoken Austroasiatic language globally, after Vietnamese and Khmer, and serves as the second state language in Jharkhand and West Bengal. Originally an oral language, Santali gained a written form through the Ol Chiki script, developed by Pandit Raghunath Murmu in 1925.

The Union Cabinet has approved the recognition of five more traditional Indian languages as "classical language" status including Marathi, Bengali, Pali, Prakrit, and Assamese. This move, announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to recognise and preserve India's rich linguistic heritage. Highlighting the government’s commitment to safeguarding India's linguistic heritage, this recognition is expected to boost employment in fields such as academia, research, archiving, and digital media, particularly by promoting the preservation and digitization of ancient texts. The languages primarily represent different regions of India: Marathi (Maharashtra), Bengali (West Bengal), Pali and Prakrit (Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh), and Assamese (Assam). #ClassicalLanguages #India #Cultural #LinguisticDiversity #Marathi #Bengali #Pali #Prakrit #Assamese
