Ever wondered which regenerative arable farming practices are the most effective or which combinations work best together? In 2017, researchers at Rothamsted set out to answer this question with one of the world’s first long-term experimental platforms testing multiple interventions. This platform studies the individual and collective impact of changes to crop rotation, cultivation, crop protection strategy, cover crops, and applying compost on productivity, nutrient efficiency, pests, weeds and diseases, biodiversity and soil health. As the plots near completion of their first full 7-year rotation, we would like to share with you what we have found and to hear your feedback. In recent years, #pistachio #growers in the #California Valley have faced challenges such as limited irrigation water and reduced quality and increased costs. Therefore, you should know that this situation will increase in the coming years due to the changes in the world's climate and the decrease in rainfall, as well as the increase in pistachio cultivation in this region. Think about the future from now on, because the use of advanced #irrigation #systems which manage irrigation by predicting the amount of evaporation and transpiration and sensors measuring the amount of moisture in the root area, they are not 100% efficient and cannot replace the limited amount of water and inadequate quality of irrigation water in sufficient quantity. Even though you pay more for fertilizer, water, land and labor every year, the performance of pistachio garden is not according to your expectations. The constant and excessive use of #chemical #fertilizers in the root can disturb the balance between the elements in the soil and disrupt the #biological #system of the #soil, and this will result in a decrease in the absorption of nutrients and the #toxicity of elements and soil #salinity. Expensive soil #amendment And it will take time. And it will result in decreased performance for years. In this workshop, you will learn how to reduce the consumption of chemical fertilizers On the other hand, how to increase the absorption of elements by the roots, or how to reduce the level of their stabilization or leaching. 🌱 New Research Publication! 🌾 I’m excited to share our latest paper: “Exploring the combination of agroecological and conventional farming practices through the hybrid farming concept”. In agricultural research, there’s often a binary approach—agroecology versus conventional farming. But the reality is far more nuanced. Our study introduces the hybrid farming concept, which aims to describe how farmers often combine elements from both approaches to adapt to evolving environmental and socioeconomic challenges. Through a case study in Tunisia, we illustrate how these combinations are flexible, dynamic, and context-dependent, reflecting the complex reality of modern farming. 💭 **Rethink Your Strategy: The Shift from Gross Margin Analysis to Net Farm Profitability** 🌾 After attending the AHDB monitor farms meeting near Cheltenham, I couldn’t shake the feeling of déjà vu. Topics that excited us decades ago seemed to circle back, yet here we are, still facing many of the same challenges. While advancements in herbicides, fungicides, and fertilisers have transformed our farming practices, we must ask ourselves: Are we simply digging ourselves deeper into a rut by relying on outdated methods? Throughout my experience working in 30 countries, it’s clear that resilient farming is key to navigating today’s agricultural landscape. We have to break free from the constraints of gross margin analysis, which often overlooks opportunities to reduce overheads and improve long-term profitability. Farmers like Clive Bailye, David Miller and Gabe Brown demonstrate that long rotations lead to lower overheads and greater success. It’s time to stop doing the same thing and expecting different results!
