Chief Executive at Family Rights Group

Family group conferences change lives by putting families front and centre of decision-making, enabling them to make a plan for and with a child and address concerns about the child.  It’s about decisions being led by those who know and love them the best. Family group conference are used internationally – from New Zealand to Norway. They are the only family-led decision making process that are well evidence with evaluations proving they safely avert children going into care and are underpinned by a set of principles and standards. The Children’s Wellbeing Bill presents the Government with the opportunity to give every child the legal right to a family group conference if there is a concern about their care or protection.  This would be groundbreaking That’s why Family Rights Group is calling on the Government to enshrine the right for families to an family group conference in forthcoming legislation and invest in local authorities to make that a reality. #childwelfare #families #children

Our chief executive, Cathy Ashley, speaking on the positive impact of family group conferences and how the Children's Wellbeing Bill is an opportunity for the Government to make England a world leader in child welfare. #familygroupconference #FGCs

I agree FGC is an excellent resource and tool. And when I was working in LAs I utilised it at every opportunity, and got some fabulous outcomes. Sadly though Social Workers are crtiical of families if they dont want to utilise it even if their reasoning is valid. And in many cases there have been issues where it's been labeled as a risk for a family not doing so. Ie.....parent has not engaged in suggested interventions which places additional concerns of emotional harm. There needs to be consideration and accountability of the power.
