At the start of 2024, the Voices of Tomorrow project was still an ambitious idea to give youth a voice through the creative arts. Now, as we approach the end of year, we have launched the first virtual showcase on THE 4TH DIMENSION https://lnkd.in/ed3p2Thw and the project has evolved into a thriving network of 25 ambassadors from across the globe. These passionate individuals have come together to amplify the importance of young voices, each contributing their unique perspectives and talents to make a lasting impact. This network was built from the ground up, a testament to the power of the vision and collaboration, and the need for young people to have a place to express their ideas authentically. Over the past year, ambassadors have led initiatives in their communities, hosted conversations about youth’s future vision, and brought creativity to the Voices of Tomorrow project. None of this would have been possible without the hard work, resourcefulness and creativity of the Curriculum for Life team led by Oli Williams, the Youth Core Circle led by Raven Frias and now Nikolett Kerekes, and my colleagues in THE 4TH DIMENSION Tom Dale and Mark Tabbron (formerly Dodsworth), and our sponsors Alison James at BIC Foundation and Ormiston Academies Trust. The great thing about projects like this is the way in which they find their shape and form not in a set of rigid ideas, (although a good framework helps!) but through the contributions of everyone involved. It can be scary when projects take on a life of their own, but it can also be exhilarating. The process hasn’t been without its challenges. Different time zones and cultural contexts require patience and adaptability, and there is always more that we want to do. But the outcome speaks for itself. We are creating a community that shares a common vision to give youth a voice and thrives on creative thinking, resourcefulness and determination. What’s most inspiring is how this initiative has provided a vehicle for action. Ambassadors, artists, volunteers, sponsors and people spreading the word aren’t just talking about change, they’re driving it, empowering young people to speak up and influence the future. And this is just the start. It is our ambition to have submissions from every single country in the world. https://lnkd.in/ecwK3TvU #VoicesOfTomorrow #GlobalChangeMakers #YouthEmpowerment #ValuesInAction #values

I saw a post recently about how advocating for arts and culture was not as important as advocating for food, security, economic needs, etc. However, "othering" or placing value on one thing versus another creates more space to devalue and perpetuate who and what has more value than others. The more we interrogate these issues and think expansively about what is possible, the more we leave room for creative, long-lasting ways to create social change, and the more we become more nuanced in how change is created. It was never enough to approach hard problems with one idea or approach; we know it's always a multi-pronged approach with multiple actors. Art is a part of the matrix for change - it always has - multiple social movements began and were sustained by artists, activists, and changemakers. I had the honor to meet some of those changemakers in my work, the collective work that we all get to witness and be a part of. The #sorosartsfellowship at Open Society Foundations is just one of such work. https://lnkd.in/eW-rR6cY

True support begins with meeting artists where they are—financially, physically, emotionally, and creatively. Through The LP’s Create Change Residency and Fellowship programs, we’ve deepened our commitment to empowering artists, offering them the tools, resources, and care they need to thrive in a community-based practice. Create Change is a journey of love, care, and empathy. We support artists by providing a space where they can explore and develop their creative vision. Meeting them exactly where they are ensures they feel enabled to serve their communities through their creative practices. In everything we do, care and commitment are at the heart of our work. This care is woven into every interaction, ensuring artists are seen, heard, and empowered. Create Change is just one example of a testament to our belief that when artists are supported with love and care, they can transform their communities and inspire others to do the same. 🌟 Peer Supervision in Cultural Spaces: Strength in Connection 🌟 Today, I had the privilege of facilitating a peer supervision session in a museum—a space where history meets the present, and challenges meet creative solutions. 🏛️✨ Peer supervision offers an invaluable opportunity for cultural professionals to reflect, share experiences, and gain fresh perspectives. In a world where cultural institutions face mounting pressures and political challenges, these conversations become a source of strength, innovation, and hope. Together, we explored the daily realities of museum life, the hurdles, and the immense potential for growth and collaboration. When we listen and learn from each other, we not only navigate challenges but also build a more resilient, connected future. 💡🤝 #PeerSupervision #MuseumsMatter #CulturalResilience #TogetherWeGrow #HopeInDialogue #ReflectAndConnect

November 9 marks 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, yet my multi platform project Voices From the Center, which documents lives during the Cold War era, feels more timely than ever. From my base in Bratislava, from 2006 to 2009, I interviewed people in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia about their experiences growing up during the Cold War. The conversations, along with photographs, art, and music, are presented on the voicesfromthecenter.net website and have been the basis for exhibitions and educational programs around the world . The oral histories on the website offer a snapshot of the experiences and thoughts of a handful of people living in Central Europe. My hope is that these stories provide readers with a sense of life in Central Europe during socialism, as well as how Central Europeans view and experience their lives today. In my experience, when we reflect on the past, we gain a better understanding of where we are now and how we got here. From this place, we can imagine how to create meaningful change, fostering a more inclusive, just, and empathetic world. #berlinwall #oralhistory #easterneurope #fulbrightscholar #fulbrightslovakia

In today's troubled times, I find myself seeing the value of museums as a tool for teaching tolerance more and more. Museums play a crucial role by providing a platform for understanding diverse cultures, histories, and perspectives. Through thoughtfully curated exhibits and educational programs, museums foster empathy and awareness by showcasing the experiences and contributions of different communities. By highlighting stories of struggle, resilience, and cooperation, museums encourage visitors to reflect on issues of prejudice, discrimination, and social justice. This helps build a more inclusive and compassionate society, where individuals appreciate and respect each other's differences. In this way, museums are vital in promoting tolerance and mutual understanding, and in this current global climate, we need as much of that as possible.
