Our #Ocean 🌊 is a precious resource, and it is imperative that development in the marine realm is undertaken responsibly, considering both coastal communities and #Biodiversity. Given the significant #OffShoreWind technical potential in #EmergingMarket countries and the urgent pace of action required to achieve climate targets, there is a need for a pragmatic and proportionate approach to guide early spatial planning to ensure the #sustainable deployment of offshore wind. The World Bank Group’s Offshore Wind Development Program, co-led by ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program and IFC - International Finance Corporation Infrastructure, have developed the #SenMap approach with the support of PROBLUE This tool is meant to support emerging market government planners identify broad offshore wind development areas of the lowest E&S sensitivity to avoid impacts on biodiversity, human development and other marine sectors. The SenMap Approach consists of four main steps: 1️⃣ Desk-based Review 2️⃣ Stakeholder Engagement 3️⃣ Filling the Gaps 4️⃣ Sensitivity Mapping Together, these steps can offer emerging market governments and developers alike insights into the potential challenges of managing E&S risks and lay the foundations for a sustainable offshore wind market. Energy is a core strategic aspect of the #transatlantic relationship. I was delighted to participate in this week's U.S. Chamber of Commerce and BusinessEurope Transatlantic Business Works Summit to discuss "U.S.-EU Leadership in the Green Transition," alongside Ivana Zuzul, Pedro Azagra Blazquez (Avangrid), Roger Martella (GE Vernova), and Luiziana Ribeiro (BASF). My takeaways: ✔ Natural gas and LNG play a key role in achieving balance among energy security, affordability and sustainability. ✔ Investments in the efficiency and decarbonization of existing energy systems are vital to meeting 2030 and 2050 emission targets. ✔ The U.S. and EU have established important incentives for clean energy technology, and need to move swiftly—and together—to reform permitting frameworks and build transparent, complementary regulatory standards to unlock the potential of #hydrogen, #CCUS, #geothermal, and other #cleanpowersystems. ✔ Efforts to graft energy, climate, and industrial policies into effective, durable national and multilateral frameworks will not work without consistent and meaningful private sector engagement. It is critical for governments to provide first-movers in #CCUS with financial support, and equally important that private capital provides the gap between the costs of CCUS and the subsidies. This is especially important so that capturers are able to serve their markets cost-competitively vs their non-capturing counterparts.
📰In today's article by the Financial Times, CEO Ruth Herbert & CCSA Board member Graeme Davies, Project Director at Viking CCS emphasise the need for continued Government support to provide investor certainty beyond current UK CCUS projects, and stress the importance of reaching final investment decisions. There is little room for further delay on CCUS, which is an essential technology in our journey to reaching net zero. Important new study by MTBS (Maritime & Transport Business Solutions BV), commissioned by International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), on "Investment Requirements of Developing Countries for Port Decarbonisation and Adaptation to Climate Change" Available on-line for free download here: https://lnkd.in/g9RmZSyN The report states that "In some cases, terminal operators and governments are not waiting for these risks to be fully mitigated and are already investing, albeit often with a bankable business case - solar, for example, is already competitive with grey power in certain cases." While I like this positive way of framing the situation, it also means that in other cases operators and governments are not "not waiting". There is most likely a role here for public support, and for ensuring predictability for investors.
