Your Fashion Designer Has Handed You Tech Packs for Your Designs. What Do You Do? Receiving tech packs from your fashion designer is a crucial step in bringing your designs to life. These detailed documents are the blueprint for sampling, so taking the time to thoroughly review them is essential. Tech packs contain a wealth of information, and it can be overwhelming at first glance. However, if you have strong opinions about your design, it's vital to go through them carefully. During the design stage, the focus is on the general aesthetic and overall look of the garment. Once the style and design direction are locked down, the designer can then delve into the construction details. These finer details, such as stitching types and the size of graphics and logos, are often finalised at the tech pack stage. When you receive the tech packs, make sure to review these details thoroughly. For logos and artwork sizing, a great tip is to print them out in actual size. If you can't do this yourself, ask the designer to send them to you in the correct size. You can then cut them out and hold them up to a garment to check the scale. Pay attention to the stitching as well. Is it a single row of stitching, a double stitch, or something more intricate? If you don't understand something, ask questions. What you see on the tech pack is what you'll get in the final product. If you love the stitching on a hoodie but it looks different on the tech pack, raise your concerns. Remember, these fine details are important but subjective. Your preferences might differ from your designer's. If you're flexible, you can wait for the first samples and then make comments and changes. This is a normal part of the process. Denim can be tricky to recreate digitally, especially with its unique washes and textures. I wanted to showcase my ability to craft realistic denim washes in 3D while adding an element of playfulness not usually associated with the finishes. The area within or around a garment, including the fit and the relationship between different parts of the design. The distribution of visual weight in a garment. Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. The relationship between different parts of a garment or between the garment and the body. Creating a focal point in the design, such as through color, texture, or a specific detail. The repetition or alternation of elements to create movement or flow in a design. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐆𝐨𝐭 I believe many of us have seen those “what I ordered vs. what I got” posts on social media, where the replicated design doesn’t quite match up to the original that looked stunning on the model. There are three key reasons why this often happens, which are: 𝟏. 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞: This can occur when the intricacies of a design, like dart manipulations or specific measurements that are crucial to the original style, are not fully understood or correctly implemented by the designer recreating it. 𝟐. 𝐈𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞: In fashion design, using the correct fabric is just as critical as the design itself. The wrong material can completely alter the appearance and fit of a garment, even if the pattern drafting and construction are executed flawlessly. 𝟑. 𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: Another reason why it seems like designers are unable to replicate the same style given is attempting to replicate a style exactly across different body shapes without adjustments. Each body type has its unique contours and proportions, which can dramatically affect how a garment fits and looks. Designers must consider these differences and may need to modify the original pattern to accommodate varying body sizes and shapes. This may mean altering length, width, and structural elements to ensure the design complements the wearer just as well as the original model.
