Studying Abroad with a Chronic Illness: Part 2 A few weeks ago, I began a two-part series on preparing to study abroad while managing a chronic illness. Life has kept me busy, but here is the final part for those who may find it helpful. Advocate for Yourself Reflecting on my study abroad experience, I realize how crucial it was to advocate for myself from the outset of my program. Initially, I viewed my condition as an inconvenience for others and only spoke up when I was at my breaking point. Living with endometriosis, a condition that isn’t obvious, often made it difficult to justify my needs. One incident stands out in particular: our program required us to participate in a park clean-up activity involving extensive walking (which is a trigger for me). I was already on the brink of a flare-up and knew that joining in would be harmful to my health, yet I struggled to make this clear. As expected, I had to stop halfway through the clean-up, retreat to a trash collection van, and later ended up in the ER due to an excruciating flare-up. I couldn’t leave my room for days afterward. Looking back, I could have spared myself the pain and stress by simply saying no from the start. Towards the end of my program, my flare-ups became more frequent and painful. Realizing I could no longer manage the 20-hour work requirement (I had chosen work over a stipend because it paid more), I finally contacted my scholarship advisor. Nervous about the outcome, I explained my situation. After consulting the scholarship team, they reduced my work hours to 10 per week and provided a supplemental stipend to make up the difference. I was surprised at their willingness to accommodate me. It made me realize that I should have spoken up from the beginning. I had wrongly assumed the scholarship rules were rigid, and my hesitation to ask for help dampened my experience. Key Takeaways Don’t repeat my mistakes. Speak up about your needs without fear or shame—closed mouths don’t get fed, and the consequences of silence are yours alone to bear. They don’t know your medical history or the nuances of your condition, so it’s up to you to ensure your needs are understood and addressed. By being proactive and assertive, you can make your study abroad experience significantly more manageable and enjoyable even when managing a chronic illness. Feeling homesick in a new country? Here's how I made my UK journey: Home away from home! 🇬🇧💙 I was nervous when I first landed in the UK. The excitement quickly went away. And then came homesickness. The busy streets of London felt lonely. And being away from my family made it worse. But here's how I managed to overcome it: 1. Joining student clubs and societies. This introduced me to different individuals. 2. Regular video calls with family and friends. This helped me stay connected. 3. I took this opportunity to try new things. I loved having new cuisines. 4. I dedicated time to studies, social activities. This helped me develop a routine. 5. Travelling to the other side of the world for a year, without an idea of the people you will meet or the situations you will get into, is never an easy task. Yet this is the task I set myself upon. Last year I took part in the University of Liverpool’s Global Opportunities scheme, which allowed me to spend a entire academic year studying at the Australian National University. The first challenge of this scheme was getting all the way to Australia. I had never travelled solo before, and the independence and self-reliability required was initially a worry. I managed it however, and this would set the precedent for the rest of my trip. To arrive in a new place is slightly akin to being thrown out of an airplane without any training. You have to learn quickly the mechanisms and operating procedures of the situation, or you will hit the ground hard. Adapting to the social customs and norms, building new relationships and setting up the routines that will carry you through the experience are incredibly important. I think I managed well, attending as many networking and social events as I could, making friends and discovering new interests. One of these new interests, classic film, led me to create a club at my college for the appreciation of these historical images. Running this club, I had to liaison with college staff surrounding funding and technology and build up democratic organs among the student body to help deicide which films or shows to put on on this or that night. In this role I also had a hand in organizing multicultural events, using my knowledge of cinematic history alongside the unique cultural knowledge of others in order to create a welcoming experience for curious students to come and engage with the wealth of ideas and stories the world has to offer. It was not a perfect experience, however. I struggled greatly with mental health issues such as insomnia. In seeking aid for these problems, I found not only the well of self-reliance I could draw upon, but also the reality of the support network I had built for myself across the world. I had people I could lean on and wanted to help me, which was essential in improving my mental health. That lesson then, about the yin and yang of self-reliance and looking for help when you need it is probably the most important of all the lessons I learned during my year abroad. That while its good to be able to stand for yourself, its not shameful to have someone help you stand up when you fall. This lesson from my year abroad is one I hope to carry in my heart for the rest of my life.
