Leadership authority does not come from a proposal. It is all well and fine for the consultant to explain to the client how great their proposal is but that is not how trust, expertise, and authority are established. Results happen when you are boots on the ground with whatever level of client relationship you embark. Meet your client where they are; intellectually, emotionally, spiritually. STRIVE TO BE: 1. Organized 2. Disciplined 3. Analytical 4. Focused 5. Creative 6. Realistic 7. Compassionate When team ideas align with best practice methods (that have been proposed by the consultant) you have a framework from which to start. This is when the consultant needs to be “invisible.” The consultant is teaching sponsor level leadership how to “lead from behind.” Paraphrased from Lao Tzu: “A leader is best when people barely know they exist, when their work is done, the aim fulfilled, the project team will say: we did it ourselves.” This is the “art” of leadership. It is where we draw our leadership superpower. We often use management and leadership interchangeably, but there are some key differences between the two, which require different skills. As we move from manager to leader side the focus start to move from: Process ▶️ Vision Organization ▶️ People Position/role ▶️ Quality Both are critical. Both bring value. You can certainly be both (but you don’t have to!) One thing is clear – becoming a leader requires high EQ and focusing on “soft skills” (ironic that they are called soft –they are pretty hard to develop) Becoming an emotionally intelligent leader makes navigating day-to day human challenges much easier. Leading others becomes much easier. Because leadership is about humans, first and foremost. If you could master any “soft skill”, which one would you love to master? #leadership #management

To All Leaders, Using the levers of Awareness (our Attention, Focus, and Intent), we can then directly apply these to any field of study… including leadership. And here is the foundational process… Observe…. Discern…. Apply Observe - We exercise our Attention through our purposeful Observations of our world. We do this by pointing and framing our Attention around a particular set of phenomena. Discern – We exercise our Focus by dialing it in and out to Discern as much information as possible out of the scene of our Attention. Apply – Guided by our Intent, we then Apply what we have discerned to the particular issues of our lives, and our leadership, while continuing to adjust from there. Observe… Discern… Apply…. This is the method beneath all other methods… it is also the most natural method for our learning and growth. This is your practical guide into the highest levels of leadership service. https://a.co/d/01dmeKwB #AQ #AwarenessQuotient #Leadership #Coaching #LeadershipDevelopment

❓ What are leadership skills, really? Are they something rare and unique, or only possessed by a selected few? The truth is, the skills we call "leadership" are not confined to boardrooms or business schools—they are the skills we use in everyday life. ✔ Leadership isn't just about holding a title or having specialized knowledge. It’s about mobilizing people to meet tough challenges. It’s the art of bringing others together to solve problems, adapt to change, and work towards a common goal, even when the path forward is uncertain. 📌The skills often associated with leadership—communication, empathy, resilience, problem-solving—aren’t exclusive to leaders. They’re the same abilities we use to navigate challenges at home, in our communities, or in personal growth. 📃True leadership is less about mastering a set of tools and more about focusing on the work that needs to be done, embracing the challenges in front of us, and inspiring others to tackle them together. 🔊 Everyone can be a leader, not because of their role, but because of their willingness to step up, face challenges, and inspire action. ✔ Leadership is a practice we all engage in, every day. #Leadership #Leadershipskills

I came across this LinkedIn post - "Leadership is a skill that can be learned and applied by anyone" https://lnkd.in/ga5jsdp7 that I had saved a little over a year ago. In taking a fresh look at it, among the many tips the author provided were a couple of suggestions that jumped out at me, as they're central elements of the peer groups I facilitate. The first was, "You also should learn from others' mistakes. When new leaders make mistakes, they learn from them and avoid making the same errors again later on down the road. Knowing where others have gone wrong will help you with avoiding similar pitfalls—and it can also help provide some helpful perspective when things don't go according to plan!" The second was, "Being open-minded is an important part of leadership training too, learning how other people think allows us all kinds of opportunities for growth as individuals as well as leaders." Whether you're a relatively new leader, heading a department, or a seasoned one running a company (or anywhere in between), this post is worth the 3 minutes it'll take you to read it. Leadership is the key that unlocks greatness in individuals and teams. Character is an important part of leadership. Character is how you show up. It's the traits we possess that allow us to lead others. To be a great leader, you must have strong character. Here are 6 ways to lead with Character: 1. Embrace the notion that your word is your bond, always. 2. Accept people as they are, not as you wish them to be. 3. Approach relationships in the present, not the past. 4. Praise in public, admonish in private. 5. Treat those closest to you with the same courteous attention as strangers. 6. Be willing to live without recognition or approval – leading is not about you. Did I miss anything? What stands out to you on leading with character? ________ Like this post? Conflict is unavoidable when you’re working with others. Leadership is a major responsibility that involves developing and guiding the full potential of teams and the organization. An important part of the growth process is learning how to handle conflict and where to take the opportunity within the conflict before healthy tension transforms into disruptive turmoil. If not handled properly, conflict makes people angry and adversely affects creativity and productivity. Effective mediation skills are a key tool for any leader. And yet this critical skill has been taught to few. My favourite Definition of Leadership: Model, Teach, Create and Develop a commitment to personal responsibility. Moving us to mutual accountability. This definition came from a company I worked at that was trying to change their safety culture. They didn't want their employees shaking their head when someone did something unsafe, while they waited and hoped management would catch them. Instead they wanted their staff to step up and say something, not chastise someone but step in and remind them of the safer way to do things. I use it regularly because it works in so many scenarios. The more we hold ourselves personally responsible, the more our team sees that then they will too. When we are at mutual accountability everyone is working together towards the same goals and steps in when someone is overwhelmed. ----- Are you a leader who has never received the right training or mentoring for your specific role? After the first session on 26 Apr on the topic of ‘Relational intelligence and Relational equity’ with Panasonic, I was able to ensure that the session was ‘not boring, not too simple, and uninteresting’. This phrase came about due to my client’s earlier experience with a previous delivery on the same topic, and having received ‘not positive’ feedback from the then participants. This time, I incorporate the feedback from my first delivery and went back for a 2nd round on 30 Apr. I had aimed for three takeaways for my participants: 1 – Know what leadership is, what is the way you lead, and the role of relationships in leadership. 2 – That develop your Emotional intelligence (EQ) is so you can be emotionally adaptable to handle any leadership situation you come across. 3 – Relational equity is regularly depositing acts of trust building into key relationships that you want to build and maintain. The more trust you have with someone, the higher your relationship equity you have with them, the easily it is to work with them. Relational intelligence leaders focus on building trusting relationships to magnify their leadership impact. Those who do not bother with relationships will almost always find their leadership impact lessened by varying degree because of the friction caused by the lack of trust. What do you think? #firsttimeleadership #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #leader #leaders #firsttimeleaders #frontlineleaders #teamleader #boring #simple #uninteresting #attentiongrabber #relationalequity #relationalintelligence #eq #emotionalintelligence #trust

💡 The notion that leaders should have all the answers is outdated. In today's fast-paced, ever-changing world and diverse multi-generational workplaces, command and control leadership is no longer effective. ❤️ Organisations are now understanding the importance of the development of #peopleleaders at all levels to become more #coach-like’ so that they ask questions instead of providing all the answers, #support their team members instead of judging them and facilitate their #development instead of telling them what to do. 👏 It’s about creating a #coaching culture that is integral to your organisation. 📢 BPP's Senior Leader Level 7 Programme takes a fresh new approach to modern leadership which is informed by the principles of coaching and positive psychology. Funded by the #apprenticeshiplevy. If you would you like to understand a little bit more, please register for one of our insight sessions on the 17th and 30th October (link to register in comments) or contact me on sueledgard@bpp.com.
