As a Neonatologist I spend a lot of money, often unwillingly and unnecessary with 25% of days an infant in the NICU not even receiving ICU level care ❗ So why is this happening? ⁉ Because we have no other care delivery offering for infant care delivery besides the most costly and invasive setting. It's #NICUAwarenessMonth. How many of you know someone who has had an NICU experience? 🙋♂️ We stand by NICU families every day, whether they're preparing for a known NICU stay or navigating the challenges of an unexpected one. A recent third-party observational study revealed that only 13.1% of Cleo-supported birthing families required NICU care, compared to 19.4% of non-Cleo families. Additionally, Cleo families who did have a NICU stay experienced an average stay of just 3.1 days — significantly shorter than the 7.6-day average for non-Cleo families. Fewer NICU admissions and shorter stays not only eases the burden on families, of course, but also deliver significant cost savings for employers. Yet another win/win for supporting parents, caregivers, and families.💡

CPQCC has led statewide improvements in NICU care quality and racial and health equity since 1997. We believe all babies and families deserve equitable, high-quality care, and we know that family-centered care helps babies thrive. Family members are an essential part of a NICU baby's care team. Research shows family-centered care can lead to healthier babies and families. Family-centered care is deeply rooted in trauma-informed care and focuses on the well-being of both baby and family. Families need support throughout the their child's NICU journey, especially in culturally sensitive ways, so they can stay centered on caring for their baby. The California NICU Family Advisory Council brings together diverse families with valuable lived experience to guide CPQCC in prioritizing, developing and putting into action tools for healthcare teams to expand family-centered care. Learn more about the 2023-2024 California NICU FAC and how these dedicated NICU families worked to advance family-centered care. Guided by statewide NICU data, the 2025 Council will focus on addressing social determinants of health, the needs of families who prefer a non-English language, making the NICU discharge process better for all babies and families, and more.

As both a mother to premature infants and a NICU nurse educator, I understand the importance of family-centered care in the NICU. The journey through the NICU can be overwhelming, but empowering parents to be an active part of their baby’s care makes a world of difference. When families feel supported, outcomes improve—not just for the baby, but for the parents as well. My goal is to equip nurses with the tools and training they need to foster this connection. Trauma-informed, developmental care is at the heart of what I teach because it recognizes the vital role that families play in a baby’s recovery.
