I recently changed my bio to include *animal rights activist*. I hesitated, as that has been given such negative connotations by the zoo industry. Yes, industry. The #AssociationofZoos&Aquarium s is a $17.3 billion industry annually--and that only covers about 270 zoos in the US out of a total 4,000 zoos. Now think of all the animals that die in zoos--thousands? Tens of thousands? No one knows. The one agency charged with enforcing the Animal Welfare Act, the U.S.D.A. Animal Plant Health Inspection Service Animal Care division, doesn't keep track. You may think--would they die anyway? Don't zoos serve a purpose? In my opinion, no, and no. Everybody is on their own journey in terms of expanding their circle of compassion to include animals. Leading animal welfare lawyer & Harvard Law PhD candidate, Carlos Conteras Lopez, discusses his journey. 💡 “Growing up, I was not really questioning…the way that we relate with animals because that’s how everybody was doing it…I was taught that that’s the way we treat animals…that’s the way we use them…we eat them” 💡 “People ask me – when did you start caring about animals?...Everything for me has been a journey…I cannot say I was born the perfect guy that was caring for animals…I met this professor, I attended that talk, I read that book, I saw that documentary…it’s a mix of things” 💡 “Women have played a crucial role in my life. I have been deeply influenced by women...[including] my wife who is also an animal rights scholar, and my professor in Barcelona who introduced me to this topic” 💡 “I attended animal law classes, Rights of Nature classes & I also had the chance to attend Federal Indian Law here at Harvard Law School, and that is also connected to this Rights of Nature philosophy and...to understand other ways, other cultures, and how we relate to animals and to our planet” Wherever you are on your journey, may you keep expanding your circle of compassion. #animals #animalrights #animallaw #animaladvocacy #OneWelfare #compassion #advocacy
