With the rapid development of generative AI programs, the way educators need to approach both teaching and learning promises to change. The collection features chapters focused on research studies involving the use of AI in college classrooms, explorations of the ethical and practical considerations of AI, and specific examples of activities that can be replicated or adapted to use with students as soon as tomorrow. Today's GenAI musing takes me back to the pre-COVID days of 2018. There was a lot of talk about the latest innovations, including AI, but we were also having a healthy discussion about teaching and learning. The key message that stood out to me when reading this article is this line: "Any discussion of the future of work should go hand-in-hand with a discussion of the future of curriculum." I would like to share my latest article, written with Dr Christine O'Dea CMBE. The article is entitled “GenAI is here to stay. Now let’s get on with it!” and it has been published by Emerald Publishing. It can be read here: https://lnkd.in/eSwmN9tB The post is essentially a call to action for us to start embracing GenAI as educators and to consider how we teach its use. In particular I want us to start thinking about use outside of university and equipping our students with GenAI that will help them utilise it effectively in industry. It comes from conversations with friends and colleagues in industry and finding that they want graduates to be GenAI literate, but what they prioritise is different to what we have been focussing on in Higher Education. What Are the Fundamentals of Good Teaching? 1. focus on lesson prep (worried about AI doing that now!) 2. feedback (worried that all the paperwork associated with 'assessments' makes feedback more onerous and thus less frequent and more 'systematised') 3. teacher reflection (assisted by Head of Dept. class visits and yearly review with Execs) - and this leads to the 4 (below) 4. mentoring/monitoring by experienced teachers 5. focus of teachers on each student in the class, not necessarily with an individual program, but rather in the teacher's attitude to endeavour to discover why some students are not progressing (achieved by 3 and 4) I am not sure that more research or 'evidence-based' teaching systems can tell us more than that. #goodteaching

The answer lies in the concept of cognitive offloading, a phenomenon that is gaining increasing attention in cognitive science and educational circles. Cognitive offloading, as defined by Risko and Gilbert (2016) in their seminal paper "Cognitive Offloading," is "the use of physical action to alter the information processing requirements of a task so as to reduce cognitive demand."
