Introducing, Kati Kish Bar-On, Ph.D., a Fellow in the NPA’s 2024-2025 IMPACT Fellowship Program (“IMPACT”) 👋 Bar-On is a philosopher specializing in the philosophy of science and social science, with a strong focus on understanding how group dynamics influence individual behavior. She is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow in the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program at MIT. Before this, she obtained her doctorate in history and philosophy of science from the Cohn Institute at Tel Aviv University. Her research bridges the philosophy of psychology and behavioral science to examine how groups, norms, emotions, and social identities interact. She is developing a comprehensive conceptual framework that integrates these elements to offer new insights into human behavior, emphasizing the interplay between mental processes and social contexts. Her ultimate goal is to apply this framework to understand phenomena of wider importance, such as the intricate interplay of personal history, cultural context, and ethical behavior; the human ability to internalize and follow social norms; the ties between identity and emotions; and the political and social phenomena of polarization. Meet our Fellow Professor Pervez N. Ghauri! Pervez is Professor of International Business and Chair at the University of Birmingham, and his research focuses on multinational enterprise (MNE) strategies on emerging market firms and society. Pervez believes the social sciences are crucial for understanding and solving the challenges we face in our daily lives. “Natural sciences (STEM) can find solutions for different problems but without understanding the impact of these solutions on society, these cannot be properly implemented. It is therefore imperative that natural and social sciences work together to tackle new realities.” You can find out more about Pervez, and some of our other Fellows, on our website ➡ https://lnkd.in/eXdRHuCw In the Meet our Fellows series, we introduce some of the leading social scientists in the Academy’s Fellowship from across academia, the public, private and third sectors, including exploring their reasons for why the social sciences matter. #socialsciences #Iamasocialscientist

An Exciting Step Forward in Research Integrity Next week marks a significant moment for the PhD Association Network of Denmark (PAND) as our own Benjamin Dante of CBS PhD School, will represent us in a prestigious #commission. Appointed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science, this commission has the vital task of updating The Danish Code of Conduct for #ResearchIntegrity (Den danske kodeks for integritet i forskning). In short, this code provides the research community with a framework to promote common principles and standards. Its purpose is to support a common understanding and culture around research integrity in #Denmark. Focus areas for the update are: 1. Research Collaboration (Forskningssamarbejde) 2. International Relations (Internationale forhold) 3. Open Science 4. Research Freedom (Forskningsfrihed) 5. Artificial Intelligence (Kunstig Intelligens) Your insights and input on these focus areas are invaluable to us. Please share thoughts, suggestions, and expertise to help shape the future of research integrity in Denmark. You can either comment here or write to pand@phddenmark.dk. For more background (in Danish), visit the Ministry of Higher Education and Science's website (links in the comments 👇). Let's come together to contribute to a future where research integrity continues to be a cornerstone of our work. It is ironic how Ph.Ds are often accused of being reluctant to change. The first lesson that I learnt during my Ph.D. journey was: In research, the only constant is 'change'. Passionate researchers are naturally versatile; adapting to new observations and processes along the way. The 'change' feeds their natural curiosity to find practical solutions for the betterment of the environment and society. #PhD #reflections

The Complexity Science Hub in Vienna recently rebranded, underscoring a pioneering approach to tackling global challenges through interdisciplinary research. Read my latest in Forbes. 🌐 Established in 2015, the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) has distinguished itself as a beacon of knowledge, dedicated to addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time, from economic fluctuations to the climate crisis, through collaborative and cross-disciplinary efforts. 🔍 A Fresh Identity for Complex Problems: "We deal with complex topics, but our goal is to find crystal clear answers to current and future societal challenges,” said Stefan Thurner, president of CSH. Their new website showcases the inherently interdisciplinary nature of complexity research and its critical role in solving today’s multifaceted problems. 🌍 Global Challenges, Interconnected Solutions: The world's increasing interconnectedness demands a novel approach to problem-solving that transcends traditional academic boundaries. CSH embodies this ethos, leveraging expertise from fields as diverse as physics, economics, and sociology to forge actionable solutions. "With the new website, we aim to demonstrate how interdisciplinary complexity research is, just as today’s problems are,” Thurner continued. 💡 Spotlight on Research Excellence: From exploring the dynamics of digital finance and systemic risks to understanding the cognitive and social dimensions of societal change, researchers at CSH are at the forefront of developing computational methods and insights. Bernhard Haslhofer's work on financial technologies and Mirta Galesic's investigations into collective belief and decision-making processes exemplify CSH's cutting-edge research. ✨ Austria’s Strategic Advantage: Situated in Vienna, CSH not only benefits from Austria's central location in Europe but also its vibrant research landscape and quality of life. Their strategic positioning enhances CSH’s ability to act as a global hub for scientific inquiry and collaboration, addressing complex issues that know no borders. The Complexity Science Hub's rebranding marks a significant milestone in its mission to foster interdisciplinary research and collaboration. How can interdisciplinary approaches accelerate solutions to global challenges, and what role do institutions play in gathering people together for maximum impact?
