🌹The Baroque period, roughly spanning 1600 to 1750, was a vibrant era in Western music. Imagine music that's both dramatic and ornate, with flourishing melodies and strong contrasts between loud and soft passages. ☘️🎼 Here are some key features: ☘️ Drama and Emotion: Baroque music aimed to stir emotions, using techniques like fast tempos and grand crescendos for excitement and slower, more intimate sections for reflection. 🌹 ☘️Polyphony and Counterpoint: Multiple independent melodies weaved together created a rich tapestry of sound. Think of it as a conversation between instruments. 🌹 ☘️ New Forms: Opera, the dramatic telling of stories through music, took center stage. Instrumental forms like the concerto grosso (featuring a small group of soloists) and the solo concerto (showcasing a single virtuoso) also flourished. 🌹 ☘️Innovation: This era saw the rise of the violin and the development of new orchestral techniques. Composers like Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi left us a stunning legacy of music that continues to resonate today. 🌹

#Pasic2024 Indianapolis Panel 11am Salón 201 Afro-Colombian Marimba de Chonta Music from the South Pacific Region: Roots, Reach and Evolution The traditional music of the Pacific region of Colombia is vast and diverse, and it encompasses both secular and sacred traditions. For its importance, UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. At the heart of many of the styles lies the marimba de chonta – an instrument known by many as the piano of the jungle. This year’s panel will focus on the Marimba de Chonta musical traditions from the South Pacific region of Colombia. The discussions will center around topics like the importance of these musical traditions in Colombia and abroad, the challenges this music is facing, how its roots, mallet techniques, patterns, harmonies, tuning, and traditions have evolved through the years, and to discuss ways in which it would be possible to introduce this music to more classrooms or audiences, while preserving its integrity.

What I find fascinating about this combined post is how it beautifully bridges traditional and modern musical worlds, weaving together two distinct but complementary narratives. The story of Maede Shafie particularly resonates because it exemplifies how traditional arts can evolve without losing their essence. Her mastery of the tonbak represents more than just musical skill - it's a powerful statement about cultural preservation and female empowerment in traditional art forms. I love how she demonstrates that innovation and tradition aren't mutually exclusive, but can enhance each other. The transition to the Yoga Tongue Drum presents an interesting parallel - it's a modern instrument that, like Shafie's work, bridges cultural and temporal gaps. While the tonbak carries centuries of Persian musical tradition, the Tongue Drum represents a contemporary approach to meditative sound, making ancient wellness practices accessible through modern design. What's particularly striking is how both parts of the post speak to music's universal power to transcend boundaries - whether they're cultural, gender-based, or temporal. The 11-note tongue drum's portability and accessibility mirrors Shafie's effort to make traditional music more approachable while maintaining its depth. This juxtaposition creates a powerful message about how musical instruments, both ancient and modern, continue to evolve while serving their fundamental purpose: connecting people through sound and rhythm.

https://lnkd.in/gtRmpw_d Pandit Dishari Chakraborty on Santoor performed Raga Music Puriya Dhyaneshri Jhala Nishaant Singh Pakhawaji Puriya Dhanashree is a raga in Hindustani classical music. It belongs to the Purvi thaat and has been derived from the defining raga of that thaat – Raga Purvi. In Western terms, the notes of Puriya Dhyaneshri correspond to the double harmonic scale with an augmented fourth. Each sruti or the microtonal interval has a definite character; the names manda, candovati, dayavati, ranjani, raudri, krodha, ugra or khsobhini denote their emotional quality which dwells in combination or singly in the notes of the modal scale: thus, dayavati, ranjani and ratika dwell in the Gandhara and each of the notes ( swara ) of the scale in its turn has its kind of expression and distinct psychological or physical effect and can be related to a colour, a mood ( rasa or bhava ), a metre, a deity or one of the subtle centres ( chakra ) of the body. ...Thus for the sringara (amorous or erotic) and the hasya (laughter) rasa, the madhyama and the pancham are used; for the Vira (heroic), raudra (wrathful) and the adbhuta (wondrous), the shadja and the Rishabha; for the bibhatsa (repulsive) and the bhayanaka (fearsome), the dhaivata; and for the karuna (compassionate), the nisada and the Gandhara are used. Every swara stands for a particular definite emotion or mood and has been classified according to its relative importance. It forms a different part of the `person' of the modal scale. For several centuries, drums have been essential to African music, ceremonies, festivals, and religion. Some drums were used for royal functions, others for performing religious rites, several for ceremonies, others for communication, and many for music and a form of cultural identity. There are many unique drums from Africa, such as the Djembe from Mali, Sabar from Senegal, Ekwe from Nigeria, Bendir from North Africa, Pokomo from East Africa, Shangaan from Southern Africa, Mongo, from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and more. African drums have different purposes ... and are of different forms, shapes, and make. They are known as percussion instruments ... unique in terms of sounds produced because this is based largely on their tuning. The tempo of African drums is usually loud and sometimes speeds up or slows down based on the song and the choral part... Which African drum are you familiar with? Read more https://lnkd.in/dXP56qsN
