This morning I had the unique opportunity to participate on behalf of The University of the West Indies at the SDG Bergen Conference 2024 as part of the Day Zero programme, where the spotlight was on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). As part of the panel, I emphasized the pivotal role of the Office of Global Affairs in advancing this agenda and shared our institution's vision and ongoing initiatives - more will be unveiled in the coming months.
Education for Sustainable Development is paramount in equipping students to navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing teaching and learning environment, notably in the reality of Climate and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Our discussions underscored the need for seamless collaboration between academia, industry, and communities, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity at all levels. While traditional educational approaches have their place, embracing innovative methods, both formal and informal, is imperative.
Implementing these changes won't happen overnight, but a strategic, step-by-step approach promises substantial rewards. #SDGs#SustainabilityEducation#GlobalAffairs#FutureofLearning

🌍 Greening Schools for a Sustainable Future 🌱
Schools play a crucial role in shaping green and sustainable future by empowering students and communities with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle climate challenges.
UNESCO's new 'Green School Quality Standard' is paving the way for a greener future, with a goal to green 50% of schools globally by 2030. Are you part of an accreditation organization? Here’s how you can align with this vital initiative and contribute to a sustainable world:
📋 Review Your Criteria: Compare your existing accreditation standards against the Green School Quality Standard.
✅ Meet the Alignment Threshold: Ensure your organization covers at least 1/3 of the recommended actions and includes four essential actions from the standard.
📝 Complete & Submit: Fill out the alignment form and send it back to us to officially join the movement!

🌱🌳 Celebrating the University of Melbourne – Highly Commended in Nature Positive at the Green Gown Awards Australasia! 🌍💚
With a bold commitment to achieve no-net-loss of on-campus #biodiversity by 2025 and a net-gain by 2030, the University of Melbourne is leading the way in on-campus ecological stewardship. These ambitious goals are grounded in the Biodiversity Baseline Data Project (BBDP), launched in 2019 to develop seven metrics that quantify campus biodiversity. Today, data collection is 95% complete, and the project is anticipated to wrap up by the end of 2024.
Thanks to the BBDP’s insights, the University has already invested $250K in biodiversity improvements, with remarkable results. Through a collaborative effort between the Sustainability Team, academics, students, and community members, 3,200 native plants were introduced across the Parkville, Southbank, and Werribee campuses in 2023 alone. This initiative, alongside restoration work at the Dookie Bushland Reserve, reflects a deep commitment to preserving and enhancing campus ecosystems.
🎥 The BBDP isn’t just a tool for Melbourne—it’s a scalable framework that can support other institutions in protecting biodiversity on their grounds. We're excited to announce a new two-year partnership with PPG to advance climate change education in schools worldwide. Through PPG’s $150,000 community engagement grant, we will develop and distribute comprehensive educational resources, including the #EcoSchools handbooks, instructional videos, and online courses in multiple languages. This collaboration will help us further our mission to empower the next generation with the knowledge and tools needed for environmental stewardship and climate action.
Key highlights:
✨ Support for UNESCO's GEP: FEE is leading the #GreeningEducationPartnership (GEP), aiming to have 50% of schools accredited under a green school scheme by 2030.
🌍 Global Impact: These resources are expected to reach 30,000 schools, 75,000 teachers, and 1 million students worldwide.

🌍 Reflecting on the LMH Summer Programmes at Oxford 🌍
This summer, I studied at Lady Margaret Hall, focusing on the complex political, economic, and social dimensions of climate change—one of the most critical issues facing our world today.
The teaching at Oxford was exceptional, with standout lectures from Katherine Sugar, Sam Hampton, Sumedha Basu, and others. Their diverse perspectives and commitment to student engagement made each session insightful and inclusive, enriching the learning experience.
The course covered key topics such as environmental sustainability, the legal and economic shifts needed for a low-carbon future, and the global politics shaping climate action. One of the most important themes was the "just transition," ensuring that those least responsible for emissions aren't the ones who bear the brunt of climate impacts.
My work consisted of essays centred on pivotal issues like Net Zero, the governance of environmental change, and the tension between justice and speed in the transition, with a special focus on the aviation industry. Feel free to reach out if these topics interest you—I’d be glad to share my work.
This experience has deepened my understanding and commitment to working towards a sustainable and equitable future.
