SACCOs are very popular in Kenya, as they create a sense of community and shared goals among their members. They help members save money, earn dividends on their savings, and access affordable loans.
According to the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), regulated SACCOs served 6.42 million Kenyans in 2022.
Here’s a quick overview of the number of members, total deposits, and average savings for some Deposit-Taking SACCOs in Kenya.

#Enhancing#Safety and #Accountability in #Crowd#Management: #CalltoAction
The alarming rate at which innocent lives are lost during stampedes at events, particularly at distribution centers, calls for immediate and sustained action. The unfortunate truth is that even the best-intentioned deeds can result in tragedy if proper crowd control measures are not implemented.
In just one week, we have witnessed heartbreaking incidents across #Nigeria. On December 18, during a Christmas funfair in Ibadan, over 30 children tragically lost their lives. Shortly after, a palliatives distribution event in Okija, Anambra State, claimed more lives, with women and mothers as the primary victims. Similarly, today December 21, another tragic stampede occurred at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama. These events are deeply saddening and preventable.
As a humanitarian and social development expert with nearly a decade of experience in North-East Nigeria, I have learned that the safety of project participants and team members must remain a priority in every program. This is why we emphasize developing and implementing effective crowd control management plans while consistently training and retraining personnel. The success or failure of any program is closely tied to these mechanisms.
It is time for all stakeholders to adopt a proactive approach. We must ask hard questions, demand accountability, and prioritize safety at events that draw crowds. The recent tragedies are wake-up calls for us to reassess our systems. With the economic realities in the country, events offering free food or items naturally attract both targeted participants and unintended crowds. This makes conducting security assessments and implementing robust measures non-negotiable.
We all have a role to play in preventing such disasters, through our actions or inactions. Let these incidents remind us to strive for a safer future. May Almighty God grant us the wisdom to avert similar occurrences.

Saw the first episode yesterday, it was balanced and tried to provide some situational context by traveling the length and breadth of Nigeria. Michael Palin is as perceptive as ever… Looking forward to the next episode on Tuesday.
