First Lady of Kenya Rachel Ruto issues a clear and compelling call to action: Africa must have universal clean cooking now, which, in turn, would empower women and girls. More than 900 million Africans lack access to clean forms of cooking, but women and girls suffer the most from this dire need. Women and girls lose an average of 1.5 hours a day collecting fuel sources – rather that working or going to school. Sadly, some 60% of women and children – as women still do most of the cooking as they watch over their children – suffer early deaths related to smoke inhalation and indoor air pollution. Tapping the combined resources of both governments and businesses can help with adopting affordable, reliable, renewable, and sustainable energy services, including clean-cooking technologies. Women make up more than 40% of the agricultural labour force in developing countries, ranging from 20% in Latin America to 50% or more in parts of Africa and Asia.    They play vital roles in agricultural production, food security, nutrition, land and natural resource management, and enhancing climate resilience.    However, despite their contributions, rural women and girls face higher levels of multi-dimensional poverty. Women are the backbone of rural communities, and their involvement in agriculture is crucial for food security, economic growth, and sustainable development. Did you know that: Women farmers in Africa produce up to 80% of the food consumed in their households, yet they often lack access to resources, credit, and markets. Empowering women farmers can increase agricultural productivity by up to 30%, reducing poverty and hunger. Women-led agricultural initiatives can also improve entire communities' nutrition, health, and education outcomes.
