UN Chief at the SDG Moment 2024 | United Nations
Secretary-General António Guterres today (24 Sep) said the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) “are facing massive headwinds,” as “crashing debt and inefficient tax systems are starving investments in health, education and food in many developing countries.”
Speaking at an SDG Moment event, Guterres said the goals “represent a bold vision, a commitment to a better, healthier, safer and more prosperous and sustainable future,” but acknowledged that “more than four out of five SDG targets are off track.”
He stressed that “the world has the wealth, the technology, and the know how to achieve the SDGs.”
“Crashing debt and inefficient tax systems,” the Secretary-General said, “are starving investments in health, education and food in many developing countries.” The Pact for the Future, he added “includes support for the SDG stimulus and global financial architecture reform to help ease the debt crisis.”
Guterres said, “it is time for a rapid and just phase out of fossil fuels and the rapid and smart scale up of renewables to drive sustainable development, energy security, and economic prosperity.”
He also emphasized that “we must fairly and sustainably meet the global demand for critical minerals that can power the renewables revolution,” and added that “protecting development gains from climate upheaval is also critical.”
Also speaking at the event, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “climate change is hitting absolutely everything around us. The costs of extreme weather impacts are going through the roof, the changes to migrations, the pressures on communities, on countries, that's going to come from a changing planet and a change in climate are going to be massive challenges that we have to meet. The way we used to do things is no longer going to serve humanity the way it did before. We have to start shifting long-term, and that means understanding that taking real, concrete action on climate change is not something that is expensive to do now, or difficult to do now, because it's moral. It's actually the cheapest way of making sure we have a better future.”
The path to 2030 must be driven by just and inclusive transitions. Convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the SDG Moment 2024 will demonstrate that transformation is not only possible but essential. It will spotlight the role of just transitions in reshaping food systems to alleviate hunger while preserving nature, advancing the renewable energy revolution for a path to net-zero emissions, and ensuring that digital connectivity empowers youth, women, older people, and persons with disabilities. These transitions are vital to secure a more sustainable and equitable future and the SDG Moment 2024 will emphasize the importance of quality education, skills development, and access to decent work as pillars of the 2030 Agenda.

🏆 CFM's GAIA wins GEF Climate Adaptation Innovation grant
CFM is honoured to be one of the 13 winners of the Global Environment Facility’s Challenge Program for Adaptation Innovation.
The GEF Program pilots and de-risks innovative approaches to adaptation funding, helping address the multi-hundred-billion-dollar climate adaptation funding gap in developing countries.
Innovative finance solutions such as GAIA, a USD 1.48 billion target blended finance facility, are essential to bridging this gap. GAIA will provide long-term loans to climate adaptation and mitigation projects in up to 25 emerging markets.
CFM’s CEO Andrew Johnstone shared: "The GEF Challenge Program grant to GAIA’s Technical Assistance Facility will enable us to advance a robust pipeline of high-impact, investable projects in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), providing local communities with sustainable climate solutions, delivered quickly and at scale."
Thank you to the Global Environment Facility for your support and to our GAIA partners FinDev Canada, MUFG, Green Climate Fund and Pollination.

🌍 At #COP29, the Global Environment Facility has announced $20 million in grants from the #LDCF and #SCCF to fund 13 innovative projects aimed at scaling up climate adaptation finance.
These projects — from financial inclusion for women entrepreneurs in agriculture to crowdfunding climate-smart loans and developing virtual green banks — will pilot new approaches to adaptation funding.
“Adapting to #climatechange is one of the defining challenges of our time, but it also offers an undeniable opportunity. By seeding these new approaches to climate adaptation funding, we are enabling the development of innovative technologies, while reducing risk and providing the conditions needed to open financial flows and enable new investors and sectors to take action,” said GEF CEO Carlos Manuel Rodriguez.
The $20M investment brings the GEF’s total funding in this program to over $40M across 32 projects in implementation or development, with plans to invest an additional $40M by 2026.

Here at COP29 in Baku , the UN system has come together under the Environment Management Group to consider integrated pathways that address climate change through sustainable food systems, health protection, water and land management, and nature-based solutions. The complex global landscape we face today is marked by political, financial, and security challenges. With resources stretched thin, ongoing conflicts hindering many countries’ commitments to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), escalating debt burdens, and multilateralism under pressure, we need to explore interconnected solutions that drive meaningful progress for all .
Focus should be on creating cross cutting pathways that support the effective implementation of the Rio Conventions and other MEAs. This involves emphasizing key connections such as the right to a healthy environment, food security, health, land and water stewardship, innovative financing, nature-based solutions, and inclusive approaches that champion gender equality and youth engagement. We need to localize and embed these efforts within National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and across various UN cooperation frameworks and business strategies.
We should align our efforts on these common threads to foster resilient and sustainable pathways .

🌍 COP29 Momentum: Inclusive climate financing 🌱
The outcomes of COP29 did not lead to significant progress in climate financing; the urgent need remains to ensure equitable and inclusive support - particularly for developing countries, where the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect women.
Women in these regions are not only on the front lines of climate challenges but also play pivotal roles as drivers of resilience and adaptation. However, systemic barriers continue to limit their access to the resources, training, and decision-making platforms necessary for meaningful participation in climate action.
What must be prioritized?
Gender-responsive climate financing: Direct resources toward initiatives that address the unique challenges faced by women in developing countries.
Capacity building and empowerment: Provide women with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to lead adaptive and resilient solutions in their communities.
Inclusive policymaking: Ensure women’s voices and perspectives shape climate adaptation strategies at all levels.
The momentum from COP29 must translate into actionable and inclusive climate financing that acknowledges and supports the central role of women in achieving sustainable and equitable climate solutions.

Welcome to the official AGNES LinkedIn account.
AGNES is a continental think tank that provides technical support to the AGN that advances the common Africa position on climate change under UNFCCC.
Let’s advocate for equitable representation and funding for African youth at COP29 and beyond. What initiatives are you involved in that support this cause? Share in the comments!
Did you know that over 90% of African youth are seeking funding to attend COP29 in Baku, yet many are being overlooked? With over 60% of Africa’s population under 25, it’s crucial that our young leaders are present at this pivotal climate conference.
As a young advocate in climate action, I' have witnessed the incredible passion and innovative solutions that my peers bring to the table. Yet, without financial support, many are unable to contribute to discussions that directly affect their futures. This exclusion is not just an oversight; it’s a massive missed opportunity for progress.
We need to change this narrative!
Here’s how we can make a difference:
Ensure young leaders have the resources to share their insights and solutions at COP29.
Together, we can raise our voices and demand the change our planet needs!
