The Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria (REA) signs MoU with 5 Private Developers to scale up electricity access. The MoUs were signed for the delivery of a combined 1,265 MW capacity of DRE projects, including inter-connected minigrids (IMGs), isolated minigrids, C&I, and PUE (the “Projects”), with the purpose of electrifying peri-urban and rural communities (including markets, businesses, households, public institutions, health clinics and schools) in both weak grid and off-grid areas. The breakdown of the combined capacity of 1,265MW is as follows: ⚡️A4T Solar: Targeting the development of 315 MW. ⚡️PriVida Power Limited: Committing to the development of 200 MW. ⚡️SKIPPER LIMITED: Aiming to implement 250 MW. ⚡️Euxwell Nigeria Limited: Focused on the development of 250 MW. ⚡️Havenhill Synergy Limited: Planning to develop 250 MW of solar energy projects. These Projects fall under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project, which is administered by The Agency. Furthermore, this partnership will bring about the introduction of new energy service models, including Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), enable the mass adoption of energy efficient appliances and PUE devices through sales, distribution and credit financing as well as bring about the introduction of a range of value-added services, including e-mobility, agricultural processing, cold storage and e-cooking. During the signing, the Managing Director/CEO of REA, Abba Abubakar Aliyu stated “this is a landmark event under the DARES programme and the introduction of the Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) model. The RESCO model aims to provide developers with a platform to become utility companies where they can be able to attract investment to deploy mini grids. Nigeria solar initiatives | Case study 2 Renewable Energy Projects by Foreign Missions in Nigeria This second piece in the series will focus on renewable energy initiatives sponsored by foreign missions in Nigeria. Our research shows that more than seven countries have contributed directly to Nigeria’s renewable energy sector in the last ten years. These direct contributions were made through investments, capacity building, grants, training, and pledges. Some of the key contributors include the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, Canada, China, India and the United Kingdom. As more industries brace up to embrace renewable energy, we expect a flurry of activities in the renewable energy sector in the short to mid-term. For example, recent news headlines show that Nigeria’s $30 billion telecom industry will expectedly be the latest to adopt clean technologies. The switch, motivated by the high operating cost of the industry, is expected to result in an annual cost saving of $360 million. We invite you to read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e7VaR3tW Connect with our colleagues Claudy Luft, Amber van Spronsen and our regional colleagues at Commercium Africa Limited for more information on how you can engage with this dynamic sector and contribute to its growth. #RenewableEnergy #Nigeria #Sustainability #Investment #SolarEnergy

Whilst in Lagos Nigeria, preparing for our solar project, I learned some staggering facts and figures about diesel consumption from experts: 1. Daily Diesel Consumption: Nigeria consumes an average of 14 million liters of diesel per day, primarily due to the unreliability of on-grid power. In essence, generators provide the daily electricity needs. 2. Annual Household Spending: Nigerian households spend an estimated $14 billion annually on fueling generators, which includes both diesel and petrol. And the costs are rising. 3. Cost Comparison: While grid electricity costs are estimated at N200 per kilowatt-hour, diesel generator-powered electricity can cost upwards of N900 per kilowatt-hour. In short: significant reliance on diesel generators in Nigeria due to the unreliable grid, results in substantial economic costs for both households and businesses. Every challenge presents an opportunity though. And this was how RenewableTechNigeria was born. Happy to share some of the results, made possible by this fantastic consortium of companies and experts.
