As those close to me know, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) awareness and education is a passion point for me, and something that is very close to my heart. PAD is a common circulatory condition that causes blood vessels to narrow and reduces blood flow to the limbs, most often the legs. If left untreated, PAD can lead to serious events including heart attack, stroke, acute limb ischemia or amputation. Some conditions make people more likely to develop PAD - including heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Individuals with diabetes are at a particularly high risk for PAD and PAD-related amputations. PAD also disproportionately affects Black Americans at twice the rate of white Americans, and – tragically – Black Americans are up to 4X more likely to have a PAD-related amputation compared to other Americans. I am personally familiar with this disparity. My father-in-law, Russel, lost both of his legs and an arm to PAD-related amputations, before ultimately losing his life to the disease. With Black History Month and Heart Health Month upon us, I had the privilege of speaking to ABCNews reporter Steve Osunsami about the connection between diabetes and PAD, including the impact PAD has in Black communities. In the interview, my wife Lauren and I shared how our family was affected by PAD, and the efforts of Johnson & Johnson to bring free PAD screening and education to communities placed at increased risk of the disease across the US through Save Legs. Change Lives.™.
