🇪🇺 If EU politics is complex, then EU migration policy is quite intricate. It is not uncommon to hear - within the European debate - proposals of reform of the migration and asylum seeking system. After roughly eight years of negotiations, several instrumentalizations of the issue, and especially many deaths in the seas and lands surrounding EU borders, the European Parliament approved the new Pact on migration and asylum policy. The result has been described as a compromise that left many unsatisfied, but at least MEPs managed to pass it before the end of the legislature. In this article, the new norms are analyzed as objectively as possible, with the aim of raising attention to the issue even for the upcoming EU elections. As a board member of the Civil Society Forum I am highly concerned about the risk of harm to vulnerable people via the implementation of this new law...
On 11 April, the European Parliament approved the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum after nearly 10 years of negotiation. According to the EP, this reform aims to modernise Europe's asylum-seeking rules and reflects the collective effort of EU countries to address migration and asylum challenges. Below, we're sharing a comment from our Board members on the new Pact.

The #EU's New Pact on #Migration and Asylum introduces a flexible but mandatory #solidarity mechanism to address imbalances in the asylum system under the #Asylum and Migration Management Regulation #AMMR . However, the persistence of the "country of first arrival" #principle raises concerns that the new solidarity measures may not fully alleviate the burden on certain #member states. It remains uncertain if these reforms will effectively resolve #systemic issues when applied in #2026. https://lnkd.in/eCh5GGjB

In the months leading up to the #EUElection, "migration," "mobility," and "asylum" were central issues shaping the political landscape. The #EuropeanParliament's passage of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum on 10 April 2024 underscores the focus on migration governance. Manifestos of key political groups like the EPP, S&D, and RE reveal specific policies on immigration and asylum, with less emphasis on labour migration and integration.
