For week 4 of the 2024 African Economic Scholars Program (AESP), we were honored to have Dr. Oludele Folarin share valuable insights on the rudiments of effective and evidence-based research with respect to Africa. Dr. Oludele Folarin is a consultant at IFC - International Finance Corporation. He is a development economist and has over five years of experience in research and the development space. He is a 2023 World Bank Group Africa Fellow and previously worked at the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA). We had a comprehensive discussion on research methodology, covering key procedures such as problem statement, literature review, data gathering, synthesis of evidence, and recommendations. We also explored various research approaches, including descriptive analysis, simulation-based studies, Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT), and review of evidence. Additionally, we identified reliable sources of data, including the World Bank Development Indicators for macroeconomic data, the IMF Data Portal for fiscal and monetary data, Demographic and Health Surveys for population-related data, and personally collected data for more specific or tailored information. My Key Takeaways: 1. Researchers with strong negotiation skills are crucial in shaping public policy. Why? Because quality research alone isn't enough to influence policymakers; building relationships and communicating effectively with stakeholder in policy formulation, adoption and implementation is vital! 2. Collaboration is key! Researchers shouldn't work in silos. Networking and building strong relationships with policymakers ensure research informs policy decisions. #research #policy #collaboration #africa #development #economics

🎓 Congratulations to Tiemele Aristide AFFROUMOU on his successful PhD defense! 🌍🇨🇮 Aristide Tiemele Affroumou is an #economist who focuses his research on #publicfinance and domestic revenue mobilization. His research primarily concentrates on property taxation in developed and developing countries. 🏘️📈 In his PhD thesis, he investigates various aspects of property taxation, a source of domestic revenue often overlooked that should be given more attention by policymakers. First, he analyses the causal relationship between income inequality, urbanization, and property taxation in advanced and emerging economies. Next, he focuses on the relationship between urbanization and property tax revenues in #developingcountries by examining the role of financial development and digitization. He also explores the impact of fiscal #decentralization on property tax revenues by examining the influence of democracy levels, corruption, and ethnic fragmentation. He underlines the importance of property rights protection to mitigate the impact of internal conflicts on property #taxrevenue mobilization in Sub-Saharan African Countries. Finally, he compares property #taxregimes in Sub-Saharan Africa, which are inherited from the colonial period, and how they affect resource mobilization till today. Recently, the chapter on #conflict and property rights co-written with Isaac Amedanou, Ph.D was published in the Journal of African Economies, a peer-reviewed journal edited by the Centre for the Study of African Economies: t.ly/7xMpH. During his doctorate, Aristide was a lecturer and a research asssistant at the Ecole d’Economie, Université Clermont Auvergne. He also did an internship at the Treasury Department in Côte d'Ivoire where he conducted a study on tax optimization strategy. Currently, he is working on various projects. He obtained his Master's in Development Economics at the Ecole d'Economie - CERDI, Université Clermont Auvergne. He received the “Alassane Ouattara Prize” in 2019 for his excellent results, the award is given to students thanks to the Embassy of Côte d'Ivoire. Besides, he also holds a Master's degree in economics from the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny and a Master’s degree in Macroeconomy from the African Interuniversity Graduate Program (NPTCI). Aristide, we wish you all the best in your future endeavours! #research #economics #Africa #decentralization #propertyrights #finance #propertytax
