Over the past two days, #IamAPHRC’s Human Development team convened researchers, educators, advocates, and policymakers to champion inclusion for individuals with disabilities. Highlights of the workshop included: ✅ Outlining policy gaps in special needs and sexual education for adolescents with intellectual disabilities. ✅ Identifying action areas for disability-inclusive education, healthcare, and caregiving policies. ✅ Establishment of a technical working group to translate research into impactful interventions. Thank you to all stakeholders for your insights and dedication to equity and inclusion. The Center remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in pursuing knowledge, opportunity, and dignity for all. #InclusionMatters #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch

The system that is supposed to support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is ‘broken’, says a report edited by Lancaster University researchers. Over the next few days we will be discussing the inequity and unpicking some of the solutions proposed. What one change would have made all the difference for you when navigating the SEND system described as broken? With approximately 20% of the world's population identifying as neurodivergent or living with a disability, we're all one degree of separation from this lived experience. When you think about the caregivers and families in this community, you realize that closer to half of the people you work, learn, or live with are navigating an inaccessible world with people who they love. Caregivers are often overlooked when we talk about inclusion or think about accommodations, but they're a perfect example of universal design making life better for everyone - better work, better learning, better environments, better access to opportunities, better support when people need it. That's the key to economic mobility and participation for individuals as well as their caregivers - because when everyone can contribute, we all benefit. #neurodiversity #neurodiversityatwork #NWRC #steps #thailand #inclusion #caregivers

📚 2 in 3 young disabled people experience mental and physical exhaustion from using public transport. This is one of the key findings from our new research, carried out by Savanta, which is the first to focus on young disabled people's transport experiences. The report showed that young disabled people face significant barriers when using transport, which “profoundly impacts their independence, social connections and ability to participate fully in society. Our recent submission to the Queensland Government on the Making Queensland Safer Bill 2024 highlighted several ‘red flags’. Recent research highlights a troubling trend: children with disabilities are significantly over-represented in the youth justice system. With figures ranging from 33-47%, this over-representation underscores the urgent need for early diagnosis and intervention. Disabilities often go undiagnosed, leading to school disengagement and early offending. Undiagnosed disability-related behaviours can result in punitive measures rather than support-based measures. We believe in a public health approach to early childhood screening and intervention. Early identification and support can prevent the escalation of behaviours that lead to justice system involvement. Investing in universal, targeted, and tertiary health services is crucial to addressing these issues and supporting all children in reaching their potential. #youthjustice #disability #earlyintervention

Young people with disabilities, together with Monash researchers, have developed practical resources to help them thrive in community programs like sport, dance, and drama. Funded by Scope’s Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald Research Grant, the project drew on their lived experiences to create tools that break down barriers and support their goals.
