These courses, mandatory before attending schools like the Airman Leadership School and NCO Academies, are designed to prepare Airmen at different stages of their careers. With a curriculum that includes building a warrior mindset, enhancing critical thinking, and aligning with strategic objectives, these courses aim to deliver the right content at the right time in an Airman’s career. EARNING YOUR WINGS Enjoying the evening with friends, Maria shared a story that resonated.  “I got my chops early on in college when I was the only woman on a student led board.” Through that experience Maria learned to stand up for herself, push back and make her voice known. It was tough and demanding AND prepared her well for corporate life.   I thought about it. In my vernacular, I call it earning your wings. When I graduated from flight school, I earned my wings. With the pomp and circumstance befitting a Navy ceremony, we were awarded our wings at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL. Under four shiny blue jet aircraft in the Blue Angel diamond formation, I received my wings. Thirteen of us graduated that day, and I was the only woman. At that point, naval aviation had been open to women for just eleven years. Then there were fewer than 150 women naval aviators, now there have been well over a thousand. One by one we were called forward to receive our wings. The master of ceremonies sounded off, “Ensign Bell graduates with honors.” I eagerly leapt forward to receive my Wings of Gold, embracing the fact that my dream had come true. No one could ever take that credential away from me. Trials are meant to test us. They prepare us for what is next in our lives. My bet is that you have seen that fact unfold in your life. Four years at the Naval Academy prepared me for the challenges of flight school. Flight school prepared me to FLY. How have you been tested and how have you earned your wings? When will we switch from race-based targets to just helping every candidate excel based on their abilities and drive? Having worked on a USAF Military Basic Training project in 2023 where the focus is a more resilient airman, I have seen the focus on the wrong things and I have seen many leaders focused on the right things. It is clear that the cadre of available candidates in society are weaker, less capable, and less motivated - perhaps than ever before. That probably says more about society today than anything else. I’ve seen MTs who want to increase the drop-out rate so we only have the best candidates moving forward. And I’ve seen the conflicting drive to reduce the drop-out rate so we have greater numbers moving forward. <Our Young Generation, Our Patriots> #throwbackthursday Last week, we successfully conducted the final Summary Exercise for our young sailors undergoing the Navy's Basic Specialisation Course. This milestone exercise puts our young learners through a stressful operational environment, preparing them for their next job aboard ships. Stressful environment? Many would ask me. Can this "strawberry generation" take any stress at all? I have always believed in our younger generation - that they are all Patriots, committed to defend our country. Its just that they do not know how, and its up to us as military educators to induct them into the SAF and train them into competent and confident soldiers. It is important then, for us as instructors to shift our mental model. Our younger generation is brought up in a vastly different environment from us (from the older generation), exposed to different types of stress and elements. In today's VUCA world, they are also arguably subjected to greater scrutiny and stress. What can we do as educators and instructors? ◇ Believe in our young ones. From the bottom of our hearts. ◇ Adopt learning strategies and technologies that they are familiar with, for seamless learning. ◇ Engage our young ones regularly. Cadet in the Spotlight: Cadet LCDRMichael Perez Unit Executive Officer, Grade 12 - High School Senior, Soledad High School's NJROTC Aztec Battalion. Years in the NJROTC Program: 4 Post-high school plans/intentions: Service Academy - United States Air Force Academy. The NJROTC Program is a citizenship development program that instills the values of citizenship, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment in each Student/Cadet. The success of our Cadets promotes patriotism, inspires student success, and directly aids in developing student leadership abilities, confidence, personal honor, and self-reliance.

Craig Mattingly presents the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal to ensigns who recently completed their temporary duty as Future Sailor Prep Course Academic instructors, Sept. 4. Adm. Mattingly emphasized the importance and impact of their roles as instructors and facilitated an open discussion to learn about their experiences.
