American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Post

It's time we talk away the dark. Suicide is a topic that hides in the shadows. All too often it goes unaddressed, even when we may sense someone is struggling. It’s time we shed some light on this leading cause of death. In our brand new national public service announcement, we highlight some of the common warning signs for suicide and encourage you to start an open and honest conversation with someone you care about, and connect those at risk to help. I lost my 19-year-old son one month ago. He was not depressed, had a job interview he was excited about, had obtained his drivers license 2 months prior, bought himself a truck, and was enrolled in the welding program at our local community college. He was also taking all of his medications as prescribed, living in a home with a great support system, was enrolled in therapy 3x per week for 3 hours each time, and was loved beyond measure. We had an argument about him being drunk in the middle of the day. He was apparently distraught about a girl humiliating him in front of their peers when he asked her out to grab a bite to eat. He was inconsolable. I was furious that this was how he chose to handle it. He walked into my bedroom while I went into the garage for 3 minutes and shot himself in the head. No warning. No cry for help prior to this. No suicide note. It was pure impulse and lack of judgment. I should also mention his father died exactly the same way 12 years prior. Almost exactly to the day. I don’t know how I will go on without my boy. We were so close. We talked about everything under the sun including suicide. How could we not given his genetics? I miss him so much #wefightforzack

Sometimes…sometimes talking is as hard as dealing with the depression. Sometimes…some days…all the time it just hurts. It’s the disappointment, the feelings of no hope. Sometimes it’s smiling just so no one knows, it’s going to church and pretending you’re okay to come home and play out how you’d do it. It’s finding no would even know your gone till it’s too late. I can relate to this man in the video. I too have gave away things I use to like, I barely sleep or constantly sleep. I’ve cried so much or couldn’t cry anymore. My mind is so overwhelmed that I forget what day it is or what I am suppose to do. I ignore calls and texts and make up excuses so I don’t have to see anyone.

What a great PSA. It really resonated for me. I think it will make an impact and encourage people to acknowledge warning signs and ask that all important question "Are you thinking about suicide?". I firmly believe it will help save lives. Way to go, AFSP. 👍

It is most powerful to ask: Have you been thinking about suicide? It's very sad and ironic in some cultures, asking this questions can be a problem. Hence, tweaking the word "suicide" may work...

I lost my dad to suicide on April 24, 2009. A day that I will never forget. The darkness overwhelmed him. Thank you for sharing this content to help others see the signs and give hope and light to those struggling.
