Research reveals that asking about suicide is not harmful and can actually be empowering to kids. It won’t plant the idea in their minds; instead, it can be a relief for a child struggling with suicidal thoughts to know that an adult is open to talking about it. Schools have closed and this is a great time to reconnect with your children. In Spite of your busy schedule, make time for your children and talk about what school has been like. Give them a chance to talk about the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly stuff they might have experienced at school. For once, give them a listening ear without judging. As they pour out their hearts to you, you might identify some areas that need to be addressed. It’s through these open conversations that you can find out if your child is being bullied at school or grappling with issues of self-esteem, stress and anxiety. Once you notice an issue, help the child overcome or talk to a professional who can help them. Remember, a problem shared is a problem half-solved. Let’s encourage our children to speak up without fear and be their safe haven this holiday.
