✅The reality of life After School in Nigeria. ✅The unemployment rate stood at 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2024, representing a third consecutive increase since the second quarter of 2023. However, the underemployment rate fell from 12.3 percent in 2023Q3 to 10.6 percent in 2024Q1. ✅The employment rate in Nigeria as at 2023 was around 3.07 %, a growth of about 2.23%. Africa has huge business potential that remains unexplored. Business has a huge potential to employ a vast majority of young people out there. While studying abroad, you have specific number of hours you are required to work. The work experience makes you job ready when you're out of school. It also makes transition easier to the labor market. Most young people don't have a plan for their life and it pains me. While in school, you're supposed to draft your six months, one year, two years, three years to five years plan. Then, carefully document how you will get there. I started working early while in school. I did sacrifice my holidays to work so I build my resume. Most jobs ask for five years to three years of working experience. How many of us has that number of years of working experience? The best any of us can boast of is 6 months of Industrial training (IT) experience. If done properly, the IT experience will expose you to the reality out there and you will start building yourself up early. While some people are born with Silver spoon, others are not. As Nigerians we must wake up to the stark reality out there. During my trip to Kenya, I met some young people there and during our interactive session, one asked me: I quote "I heard that when you throw a stone in Nigeria, it hits a graduate". Could it be that the majority of the unemployed in Nigeria are graduates? Most young people that never attended school learn a trade and are into business or skill-based job. What of the graduates? By the time you're done with school, some of these uneducated ones have upto six years of practical work experience? The day you complete the compulsory National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), a whole new chapter opens. Your parents now turn to you to support the family. It's then that the unprepared start job hunting. Without a plan, how do you get there? Plan, research, document, implement.

CAREER CHOICE CHANGE IN NIGERIA ; A LIFELONG TREND II - FACTORS INFLUENCING CAREER CHOICE CHANGE 1. SELF DISCOVERY While I'd love to attribute career change to various factors, I'll start with the root cause. As our motivational speakers aptly puts it, "Before you shift the blame outward, look inward." Even before criticizing the educational system for its rigorous admission processes ask your younger and current self; Do you really know what you want to become in life? Do you have a strong desire to fulfill a definite passion? Do you know your innate strengths and weaknesses? Have you identified what you were built for? How convinced are you in the future you want to build and the career path you have chosen? At the heart of Nigeria's career choice change challenge lies the issue of self-discovery. Many individuals fail to understand themselves before making crucial career decisions. How many youngsters are opportune to receive career guidance and counseling just before they choose between Arts , Science and Social Sciences in Secondary School? How many engage in open discussions with their parents about their aspirations? How many are exposed to diverse careers beyond traditional options like medicine, law, and engineering? Without guidance, how can they Identify their true selves and what career path to choose? If they are not exposed to other possibilities how will they know they can be something more than a Doctor, Lawyer or Engineer? How do they communicate their desires to their parents in a supportive environment if not granted the opportunity? As my Computer Science teacher once said, "Garbage in, garbage out." So, who bears the responsibility? The young Nigerian? Survival of the Persistent in Nigeria’s Job Market The job market today feels like a game of survival, smart, hardworking, and qualified individuals fighting over a limited number of positions. Everyone knows jobs are scarce, but no one is willing to back down. It’s like inflation, but instead of money losing value, it’s qualifications: there are too many CVs chasing too few roles. In Nigeria, where the economy is struggling, it’s common to see overqualified candidates fighting for entry-level jobs. Picture a 28-year-old graduate with a master’s degree going from one graduate trainee program to the next, hoping to stand out. Out of thousands of applicants, only a few will get in. To make it, you have to be exceptionally skilled and have a bit of luck on your side. People often say, “There are jobs, but not enough skilled people to fill them,” and that’s partly true. Even now, some jobs stay open because they need specific skills that are hard to find. But how are people supposed to learn these skills in a country with shaky economic policies, a broken education system, and a habit of outsourcing work to foreign experts who rarely pass down knowledge? While it’s true that everyone has a role in shaping their own destiny, our environment also plays a huge role. Like in genetics, where your traits can change based on your surroundings, your success in Nigeria is shaped by the broader economy, government policies, and other outside forces. To every Nigerian out there still searching for a job, hoping for that call or email, keep putting in the effort, keep learning, and stay hopeful. With hard work, faith, and resilience, things will eventually fall into place. It would be helpful if recruiting firms shared the number of applications they receive for each role and provided feedback to candidates who didn’t make the top scores. Only notifying top scorers creates a culture of silence, and we can’t demand transparency in things like elections if we aren’t practicing it on smaller scales. 🇳🇬 Which Way Nigeria? 🇳🇬 As we navigate through 2024, it's becoming increasingly clear that this year presents unprecedented challenges for Nigerians. The relentless rise in prices across all sectors is lamentable, and the silence from our government is deafening. Personally, I've been deeply affected by these circumstances, spending nights pondering over ways to secure additional income. The Pain of Unemployment as a Graduate in Zimbabwe Graduating from university is often seen as a significant milestone, a moment filled with hope and promise. However, for many graduates in Zimbabwe, this achievement can quickly turn into a source of frustration and despair. The job market is challenging, and the pain of not securing employment can feel overwhelming. You are not alone in this struggle; countless others share your experience of sending out applications, only to be met with silence or disappointment. Imagine waking up each day, scrolling through LinkedIn, searching for that perfect opportunity. You meticulously craft your resume and cover letter, tailoring each application to fit the job description. Yet, days turn into weeks without any response. The feeling of rejection can be disheartening. Each unanswered application feels like another door closing on your dreams. Moreover, it’s not uncommon to find job advertisements after the deadline has passed. This adds an additional layer of frustration—knowing that opportunities exist but are just out of reach. However, it’s crucial to remember that these feelings are valid and shared by many graduates in Zimbabwe and beyond. The job market is competitive, especially in regions facing economic challenges. Dear job seekers, Don't beat yourself over your unemployed status Don't give up easily after applying for your jobs. There are two factors that affects unemployment 📕The unemployment rate; the unemployment is about 4 to 10 meaning out of 10 graduates for are likely to be unemployed based on data. For a country that doesn't value data. I Believe this not is accurate 📕For the remaining jobs available they left to the best of the best and internal referrals. Consider the number or first class and second class graduates Nigeria university churn out every year now this are the people you a competiting with for jobs, for a country that assumes immediately you finish high school the next step is university, that's a huge number to compete against. What to do as job seeker to address your situation⁉️ 📍Don't apply for jobs anyhow because you are setting yourself up for mental health breakdown. 📍Do a self evaluation, access your self and your skills to know where you are best suited and the likely organization that needs your skills. 📍Write a list of organization you will like to work with. 📍Go to YouTube search for the steps and easiest ways to pass assessment. 📍Search for 10 staff on LinkedIn from this organization and coldmail then, make sure your Cv is ATS complient. 📍Make sure your LinkedIn you are sharing value should in case the employers visit your page. If every of this step is carried out with intentionality you are on your way to changing your status. Leaving The Problems and Finding a way Out. We get to complain of the educational system in Nigeria and some how I have been part of the train.But I got a new drive recently and I have Hope. I don't feel hopeless like I use to or find myself asking What's next?? there by wanting to settle for less. I feel this should be some sort of motivation to those who feel self pity and are ready to settle for less.I want you to know there's more for you, step out!! make research. The internet is really a large space, social media is for our advantage. We are not just putting out empty content for no purpose. There should be an aim to ever content, it should be impactful, it should attract prospect. Recently, I have had to remind myself that no course is a dump, all courses have it's areas of function. In my last post Oluwatoyin Felicia made a comment about how we lack structures to practice courses we have in Nigeria, however , she went further to say she doesn't think the courses are obsolete. Which I replied saying her point is valid. We barely utilize our opportunities ,yes I said opportunities because we have them right in front of us. We are too focused on the problem that we can't see. Yet, people are getting new Jobs even in the same courses we speak ill of. I have repented and I choose to focus on the way out. I know they're Jobs but then Are you employable??? That's another issue. In my next post I'll share my work experience of how I worked in two Fashion houses within six months. Many job seekers find themselves applying for countless jobs, often with little to no response. 2. Nigerian universities tend to emphasize theoretical knowledge, often at the expense of practical skills. As a result, graduates find themselves underprepared for the realities of the workforce, leading to longer job searches and frustration. 3. Corruption and Favoritism In Nigeria, nepotism and favoritism are common in the recruitment process, where connections and influence can sometimes matter more than qualifications. This systemic problem often leaves deserving candidates without access to opportunities, as those with the right connections secure jobs more easily. 4. Underpaid and Unstable Roles For those who do find jobs, low wages and job instability are common issues. Many entry-level positions offer salaries insufficient to cover basic living expenses, particularly in urban centers like Lagos and Abuja. Additionally, unpaid internships and short-term contracts are widespread, leading to financial strain for young workers who struggle to advance. 5. Economic Challenges Nigeria’s economy is often unstable, with high inflation and rising costs of living. This economic volatility affects businesses, limiting job creation and increasing layoffs. In such an environment, job security is rare, and job seekers find themselves in a cycle of searching, accepting low-paying jobs, and facing layoffs. Conclusion Getting a job in Nigeria is undeniably challenging, with various structural and economic factors at play. For young Nigerians, resilience and adaptability are essential, as they often have to look beyond traditional employment and consider freelancing or entrepreneurship to make a living. Addressing these issues will require systemic changes in education, governance, and economic policy to create a more inclusive job market for all Nigerians.
