I am honoured to co-author this chapter about 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 in the book “Digital Sustainability: Leveraging Digital Technology to Combat Climate Change" with Marilena Gemtou, PhD and Evangelos Anastasiou This chapter discusses how smart farming technologies are being used to optimise and transform agricultural practices and food systems to make them more sustainable and resilient to the climate change and food security crisis. It further elaborates on how the adoption of these technologies comes with various barriers and drivers which hinder or aid farmers in their transition to digital agriculture. It discusses some of AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development)'s work on BEATLES project EU analysing the European policy framework to support and monitor digitisation in agriculture and the food systems as well as the international visions of future food systems based on digital technology as espoused by international agencies such as the United Nations, FAO. OECD - OCDE and The World Bank 

There is increasing recognition that behavioural shifts at individual, systemic, and policy levels are needed to foster the adoption of climate smart farming practices and technologies in the EU. Furthermore, EU policies need to consider the complex decision-making processes across the entire food value chain. Co-creation with relevant stakeholders across the food value chain can play a key role in addressing these gaps. Co-creation is a core component of the HORIZON Europe BEATLES project (Behavioural Change Towards Climate-Smart Food Systems). As part of the co-creation process, we have identified and engaged multiple stakeholder representatives across 5 food value chains in the EU - wheat farming in Lithuania, organic dairy farming in Germany, pig farming in Denmark, organic apple farming in Spain, onion and potato farming in the Netherlands. 🌿  On June 12, 2024, the European Economic and Social Committee hosted a public hearing on Aligning the circular economy and the bioeconomy at EU and national level . The aim?  Boost synergies between bioeconomy, circularity and sustainability through a systemic approach to the circular bioeconomy,  led by rapporteur Cillian Lohan. Blanca Casares Guillén, policy expert at AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development), presented “Circular (bio)economy: a promising pathway for sustainable farming and development in rural areas?” 🍃✨ She highlighted significant political momentum, including a flagship initiative for prosperous rural areas with actions for the development of a sustainable bioeconomy.The Council Conclusions in 2023 stressed the need to focus on rural areas in developing a bioeconomy.
